Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Is Darkie / Black Beauty a totally black horse?

Answer: No, he has one white foot and a star on his forehead

Black Beauty began life being called Darkie, living with his mother Duchess on a farm belonging to Farmer Grey. The early years of Black Beauty were those of discovery and included his time of being broken in to both a saddle and harness. Life on the farm with the horses and colts was idyllic.
2. After being sold, Black Beauty went to Squire Gordon at Birtwick Park. What two horses were his stable mates?

Answer: Merrylegs and Ginger

Black Beauty was sold when he was four years old to a kind owner, Squire Gordon. It was Squire Gordon and his wife who renamed Darkie to Black Beauty. At Birtwick Park Black Beauty was stabled with Merrylegs and Ginger and he enjoyed a happy life there.
3. In the chapter "A Talk in the Orchard", Anna Sewell took the opportunity of discussing the use of "blinkers" on horses.

Answer: True

This chapter has dialogue between Black Beauty, Merrylegs, Ginger, Sir Oliver and Justice about the cruelty of tail docking (both horses and dogs), the usage of a bearing rein causing pain and agony to the horses, and the danger of using blinkers.
4. After Squire Gordon sells Black Beauty to Earlshall Park, it is the first time that Beauty has experienced the bearing rein causing pain and suffering. Why was the bearing rein used?

Answer: It was the fashion of the day.

The fashion of the time in London was to have the horse's head pulled up as high as possible, making it walk in a very exaggerated way. It was a very painful process, hurting the horse's mouth, neck and chest, and limiting their capacity to breathe.
5. What happened to Reuben Smith on the night when he rode Black Beauty even though the horse had a loose shoe?

Answer: He died when Black Beauty fell.

Reuben was an experienced horse handler and was well respected except when he drank. Unfortunately, on this night Reuben became intoxicated and rode Black Beauty with a loose shoe. Galloping over rough stones, Beauty lost his shoe and his hoof became badly split, causing him to fall down hard on his knees. Reuben was thrown off and was killed.
6. Because of Black Beauty's injuries from the fall with Reuben Smith, he was sold to livery stables in Bath. How did Black Beauty get there?

Answer: He travelled by train.

After Black Beauty was badly injured on both knees, he was considered inappropriate for the Earl. The decision was made to sell him to a livery stable in Bath. Beauty went to Bath by train, which was a new experience for him. As a job horse, Beauty had a variety of riders, some kind and many cruel.
7. Whilst in Bath, Black Beauty was sold to Mr Barry. Because of the bad behaviour of two consecutive grooms, Mr Barry sold Beauty at a horse fair.

Answer: True

Mr Barry was a kind man, but he was inexperienced at looking after horses and therefore trusted his grooms. The first groom stole food meant for Black Beauty and Beauty's health suffered. When Mr Barry found out he fired him and hired another groom.

This groom was lazy and did not clean and maintain the stall, causing Beauty foot problems. After this second incident Mr Barry decided to sell Beauty at a local horse fair.
8. Black Beauty was sold to Jerry Barker, who was a London cab driver. Beauty worked hard and endured a very difficult life in the role. What horse was Beauty's stable mate?

Answer: Captain

Captain was a war horse that ended up with Jerry Barker as a London cab horse. Jerry was a very fair man, religious and kind. He never worked on a Sunday, as he wanted to spend time with his family and also rest his horses.
9. Nicholas Skinner was a cruel cab owner. What happened to Black Beauty when he could not work anymore?

Answer: He was rested and sold at a horse fair.

After being treated very badly by Nicholas Skinner, forced to work long hours daily without a break and over burdened, Black Beauty collapsed. Believing that Beauty was not able to recover, Skinner was going to send him to the knackers. Skinner was talked into letting Beauty recover by the farrier and he was sold to Farmer Thoroughgood.
10. After Black Beauty was rested at Farmer Thoroughgood's property, he was sold to three sisters. Who was Black Beauty reunited with?

Answer: Little Joe Green

When Farmer Thoroughgood took Black Beauty to the sisters' property, Little Joe Green was their groom. Joe, who had cared for Beauty at Squire Gordon's, recognised Beauty's markings and from then on Beauty was called just that. Beauty was fourteen years old at this time and spent his final years with the sisters, never to be sold.
