Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What did Caddie drop on the floor in surprise when she saw that the circuit rider was there for supper?

Answer: Hazelnuts

Caddie had been out on an adventure with her brothers, Tom and Warren. Her brothers had decided to go on ahead to the house for supper, but Caddie stayed behind, wanting to pick more hazelnuts than her brothers. But when she came inside, she discovered that the circuit rider had come for supper! In her surprise, she dropped the hazelnuts all over the hardwood dining room floor.
2. What was Caddie's real name?

Answer: Caroline Augusta

When Caddie had been a baby, she was very frail. Mr. Woodlawn decided to let her roam free like the boys, to play outside and climb trees, instead of sitting inside and knitting like most girls did in Caddie's time. Mr. Woodlawn's experiment worked; Caddie soon became a very happy and healthy tomboy.
3. Whose clock did Caddie mend?

Answer: The circuit rider's

Caddie, stuck inside sick for the winter, went upstairs to the attic, where Mr. Woodlawn fixed clocks in his spare time for his friends. She began tinkering with a clock that the circuit rider had brought in, and with Mr. Woodlawn's help, fixed it.
4. Who did Tom send the expensive Valentine to?

Answer: Katie

Tom was sweet on Katie Hyman, so he worked for the General Store owner until he could afford to pay for the Valentine. He sat it on Katie's desk on Valentine's day - all the girls were jealous of the unsigned card that read "Roses are Red, Violets are Blue, Sugar is Sweet, and so are You".
5. What did Tom proclaim as "one of the seven wonders of Dunnville"?

Answer: The scalp belt

Big John was leaving for awhile, so he left his dog and scalp belt in Caddie's care. Big John hadn't actually killed the scalps' owners - his father had, and had given Big John the scalp belt when he died. Tom, Warren and Caddie put on a peek show for the children of Dunnville, telling children it was their one chance to see "Bloody Tomohawk's Scalp Belt".
6. Who did Caddie spend her silver dollar on?

Answer: The Hankinsons

Uncle Edmund had given Caddie a silver dollar, and Caddie had put it aside for a rainy day. One day, the Hankinson children were very sad because their mother had gone away. To cheer them up, Caddie had bought them handkerchiefs, combs and candy, using up her whole silver dollar. But it was worth it - the Hankinson children were very happy at the end of the chapter.
7. What did Warren have to recite for the school program?

Answer: "If at first you don't succeed, try, try again!"

Warren was really nervous about the end-of-year program. To ease his nervousness, Tom made up a parody of Warren's rhyme and said "if at first you don't fricassee, fry, fry a hen!". So it was disastrous when Warren accidentally said Tom's version in the actual program!
8. Pee-Wee died at the end of Tom's story.

Answer: False

Tom made up a story about a clever man named Pee-Wee who made the best of every situation. The story became a Woodlawn classic, and Caddie would have to tell the story to her children and grandchildren for years to come.
9. Who voted to go to England?

Answer: Clara

Father was from England, and inherited a large amount of money and estate. The family had to choose whether to stay in Wisconsin or go to England, so they came up with a system; each family member would put a slip of paper that said "stay" or "go" in a hat, and if there were more "stay"'s than "go"'s, the family would stay in Wisconsin.

In the end, there was only one "go", from Clara, who decided she didn't want to go to England anyway.
10. Caddie was a real person.

Answer: True

If you're anything like I was when I was younger, you might have skipped right over the author's note at the beginning of the book. But if you didn't, you would have discovered that Caddie Woodlawn, whose name really was Caddie Woodhouse, was the author's grandmother, whom the author was raised by. Caddie would spend hours telling her granddaughter stories of her childhood, that the granddaughter eventually decided to write into a book.

The stories in the book are mainly true, according to the author, but rearranged a bit to fit into the book better.
