Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the end of the third book, "The Dead of Night", Dan and Amy (and Atticus and Jake) received a cryptic instruction from Vesper One that the next thing they need to acquire was a priceless jewel in Berlin. They only get details once they finally arrive in the city. What is the name of the jewel that they must steal from the Pergamon Museum?

Answer: The Golden Jubilee Diamond

Reports of strange weather all over the globe intrigue the four as they travel by bus to Berlin from Heidelberg... by bus because their connecting flight gets grounded by the earliest snowstorm in German history. And since the bus ride gets them into Berlin much later than they would have by plane, they are not only informed by Vesper One what they must steal, but also that they only have about two hours until the museum closes.

Vesper One has two fake policemen accost the foursome, pretending to arrest them, but the purpose of the incident is only to plant a paste imitation Jubilee Diamond in Amy's bag to switch for the real one.
2. While Amy and her gang are in Berlin, Hamilton, Jonah and Erasmus are tracking Vesper Five at the site of Pompeii. Who is Vesper Five?

Answer: Luna Amato

The Vesper Council of Six are the most powerful of the Vespers, each having a specific role in the council to complement the others and to work effectively. Luna Amato is the spymaster, using her connections as an Interpol agent to gather needed information.

Cahills Hamilton Holt, Jonah Wizard and Erasmus Yilmaz had followed a lead to Pompeii in Book 3, and now have a lead on the location of Vesper Five, a.k.a. Luna Amato, who they believe was responsible for the murder of William McIntyre, the Cahill family lawyer.
3. In the Pergamon Museum, Atticus convinces the head of security to give him a personal tour by implying a friendship with which high profile German personality?

Answer: Chancellor Angela Merkel

In an effort to distract the security people from noticing the presence of Interpol's most wanted (Amy and Dan Cahill), Atticus manages to convince Herr Rommel (the head of security) that he knows, and is even staying with, Chancellor Merkel.

While in the security room, Herr Rommel shows Atticus the state-of-the-art facial recognition program, and Atticus tries to keep anyone from noticing the two Cahill kids. He also sees Interpol agent Milos Vanek trailing Dan through the museum. Unfortunately, Amy sets off the metal detector, ruining whatever chance they have, and Atticus uses his computer skills to shut down the power. Dan and Jake get out, but Amy and Atticus both get caught.
4. With Amy and Atticus captured, Jake pretends to be Milos Vanek's Interpol colleague and bluffs Herr Rommel into releasing them. What name does he use?

Answer: Gale Monist

In the confusion of the power outage, Agent Vanek had captured Dan, but Dan managed to lift Vanek's handcuff keys and wallet and free himself, handcuffing Vanek to a stanchion in the process. When Jake finds Dan in the dark and Dan explains what happened, they come up with the plan to use Vanek's ID to play the part of another Interpol agent.

Everyone manages to get safely away from the police, but they did not manage to steal the Golden Jubilee diamond, and Amy's watch, which she removed to go through the metal detector, was left behind. Hidden in the watch is the important family heirloom ring that the Vespers have been after since the time of Gideon Cahill.
5. The whole attempt to steal the diamond was a ruse by Vesper One to allow the Wyoming twins to steal an ancient manuscript in the confusion. Published in the 9th century by the Banu Musa brothers, what is the manuscript called?

Answer: The "Book of Ingenious Devices"

With the "Book of Ingenious Devices" in Vesper hands, Amy and Dan receive new instructions requiring them to make their way to Timbuktu to 'recover the transgression' within 48 hours, or either Phoenix Wizard or Alistair Oh will (on the flip of a coin) be killed.

The "Book of Ingenious Devices" was written by three scholarly brothers from Baghdad. The manuscript describes the workings of various automated machines and other mechanical devices.
6. The seven Cahill captives attempt a breakout and they manage to get outside, where they are told by a random hiker that they are in Germany's Black Forest. Before they can get too far, all but one of the escapees is recaptured. Who manages to get away?

Answer: Phoenix Wizard

Reagan fakes having a heart attack, which the guards watch on their monitors. After the captives try to resuscitate her, they eventually give up, and the guards eventually come to collect the body. But it ends up being a ruse, and the captives rush the guards when they come in, incapacitating them.

They find a ventilation shaft to the outside, and climb out. Reagan and Nellie stay to drop rocks on their pursuers, giving the others a chance to get some distance, but very quickly they are attacked by guards with pit bulls.

About a mile away, the others come to a precipice with a dangerous path, and begin to make their way down. Phoenix manages to 'escape' when the ground gives way beneath him and he falls to the river far below. The others all get recaptured, but not before meeting a hiker on the trail, who lets them know where they are. The hiker doesn't survive when the guards catch up to the escapees.

The hiker, who names himself as 'Martin Holds', is actually Vesper One, giving them false information as to their whereabouts, then making it look like he is killed by the Vesper guards.
7. Following direction from Vesper One, Amy, Dan, Jake and Atticus go to Timbuktu to search for the "Apology" - an article written by a Roman centurion. While searching the many libraries in the city, they receive help from two locals. By what street names are they known?

Answer: Bart and Mouse

'Bart' meets the foursome at the airport, through an arrangement made by Jake's father. When they challenge him on whether his name really is Bart, he says, "If you prefer you can call me Basharat Antarah Rawahah Tajamul." Bart also suggests that they use a relative of his as a runner to help communicate as they search (little to no cell service).

The boy is called La Souris, which is French for 'the Mouse', and rather than use the unfamiliar French term, the four travelers go with 'Mouse'. They learn later that his real name is Aza.
8. Erasmus, Hamilton and Jonah track Vesper Five to Mumbai, India, where he leads them to a Vesper stronghold. A confrontation ensues, and Erasmus is killed. In retaliation, Jonah Wizard shoots and kills Vesper Five.

Answer: True

Interpol agent Milos Vanek enters the mix in Mumbai, following information given to him by Dan (in Berlin) about the whereabouts of the traitorous Luna Amato.

Hamilton and Jonah get tricked by a decoy, but Erasmus follows Amato (and is in turn followed by Interpol agent Milos Vanek). At the stronghold, Amato captures Vanek, and Erasmus steps in to prevent a cold-blooded murder. Things don't turn out as he expects, though, when Erasmus lets Amato distract him for just long enough to hurl a bo shuriken (iron throwing dart) into his heart.

Hamilton and Jonah arrive too late to prevent Erasmus' death, but Jonah comes in 'guns blazing', shooting Amato three times.
9. What symbol, originally found on the de Virga world map (from Book 2), is instrumental in locating the "Apology"?

Answer: A compass rose

Dan and Atticus are looking for the "Apology" when Dan spots a painting of the Ishtar Gate (of which they saw a replica in the Pergamon Museum in Berlin) at a street vendor's stall. They speak with the artist, who turns out to be Bart's father (and Mouse's grandfather), Mr. Tajamoul. Mr. Tajamoul gives them the information that the compass rose mark (on the de Virga map and seen again the Ishtar Gate) is actually the mark of an archaeologist by the name of Robert Koldewey. This information eventually leads them all to the site of an archaeological dig, where they find the "Apology" etched in a block of salt.

Thankfully, they are able to find it before the deadline given by Vesper One.
10. Back at the command center in Attleboro, Sinead Starling sends a message to Dan and Amy with news of the deaths of Erasmus and Vesper Five, along with a claim of proof that identifies a traitor amongst the Cahills. Who does she name?

Answer: Ian Kabra

With Ian's recent activity (trying to find the truth about what his mother is up to) done in secret, Ian had already been under suspicion, and his usual haughtiness doesn't help things. Without actually seeing any proof (yet), Amy and Dan are ready to believe that Ian is working with the Vespers, and they are quick to tell him so when he calls, despite his protestations.
