Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At Gurna Village Post Office, Cairo Jim is shown a huge ball of string by a rather eccentric elderly gentleman. This gentleman needs to find the end of the string. Who is this eccentric but energetic gent who runs the Post Office?

Answer: Quentin Turhan-Bey

Mr Turhan-Bey has been collecting the string for seventy-three years and is obviously aware of the motto of the Old Relics Society ("You never know when you'll need a good bit of string!") As retirement approaches, Mr Turhan-Bey feels he must return the string to the Egyptian Postal Service. His conscience causes some problems for Jim!
2. Unfortunately, in the unwinding process, the huge ball of string rolls away and Cairo Jim has a hard time getting away from it. With the help of Doris, Jim escapes being crushed and the ball of string ends up bobbing merrily in the Nile. Which of these is the correct route that Jim takes, followed by the ball of string, from the Post Office to the Nile?

Answer: Past Omar Darling's Clementine Hat shop, Mr Hussein Fahty's fruit stall, the Sotnot-Re Record and Gramaphone shop and some restaurants

Through all the excitement, Brenda the Wonder Camel is calmly waiting for Jim and Doris while reading her latest "Melodious Tex" novel in Mrs Amun-Ra's Tea Rooms. Doris explains their lateness by explaining that Jim got "tied up". One of Geoffrey McSkimming's many quirky puns.
3. At long last, Jim gets to read the letter he received at the Post Office. It's from Gerald Perry Esquire to tell them of the discovery of some Hieroglyphics at the Temple of Hathor. Cairo Jim, Brenda and Doris set out to see these. Who do they take with them to take photographs of the hieroglyphics?

Answer: Pyrella Frith

Pyrella Frith always dresses only in white. She is excited to accompany our heroic trio as she has a new Voigtlander camera to try out. Jocelyn is busy as flight attendant for Valkyrian Airways. Mrs Amun-Ra is too busy baking Shergold cakes at her tea rooms and Dr. Unique Merkel is an archaeo-metallurgist, who will help Cairo Jim later in the book.
4. The hieroglyphs at the Temple of Hathor are important as they shed light on the Equation relating to the Transilient Sceptre of Rameses. According to the hieroglyphs Jim and Doris translate, what can the Transilient Sceptre of Rameses do?

Answer: Turn all objects to gold

The interesting part is how to make it all work! The translation by Jim and Doris doesn't tell them how - they need the help of an expert to solve that mystery!
5. In the meantime, Neptune Bone has found out about Jim's expedition. Who has given him this information?

Answer: The repulsive twins, Kelvin and Abdullah Rhampsinites.

Kelvin and Abdullah Rhampsinites, whom nobody can tell apart, were eavesdropping when Cairo Jim read aloud Gerald Perry's letter. Repulsive as they are, the twins provide quite a bit of comic relief when they appear in the Cairo Jim books.
6. Neptune Bone sends Desdemona to the Temple of Hathor to find out more information about Jim's discoveries. What does Desdemona bring back for him that exceeds his expectations of her (and gets her into Bone's "good books" for once)?

Answer: The film from Pyrella Frith's camera with pictures of the hieroglyphics so Bone can see them for himself

It's not often that Desdemona does such a good job! Bone is quite amazed but is not overwhelming in his praise. Instead he sends Desdemona to the all night film developing shop.
7. Now that the equation has been found, Neptune Bone realizes he needs to have the Transilient Sceptre of Rameses in his possession. Whom does he pose as in order to gain admittance to the Luxor Museum and steal the sceptre?

Answer: Mr. Lucien Allsorts of the Allsorts Telephonic Company

Yes, Bone disguises himself as Mr. Lucien Allsorts of the Allsorts Telephonic Company. He claims to be part of a "While you smile a mile on the Nile" tour group. The guard is singularly unimpressed but Bone is able to bribe his way in. He then swaps the real sceptre with an artificial one the Rhampsinites twins have made.
8. Cairo Jim, Doris and Brenda need the help of an expert to figure out how to use the Equation of the Transilient Sceptre of Rameses. Gerald Perry Esquire arranges for Dr Unique Merkel to visit the expedition site. Our intrepid trio collect Unique from Luxor railway station. Which physical characteristic of Unique stands out the most to Jim?

Answer: Unique has very petite feet

Jim is rather taken by Unique's very small feet. She has them enclosed in smart canvas shoes coloured with just a touch of flamingo pink. (These match the rather stylish flamingo pink suit she wears.) I wonder if Jocelyn Osgood should be concerned about Jim's fascination for another woman's feet?
9. Apart from being a very talented archaeo- metallurgist, Unique is a very talented musician. Which instrument does she play though the night, keeping Jim, Doris and Brenda awake?

Answer: Double Bass

For someone as petite as Unique, she chooses a pretty large instrument to play - and play and play...
10. Brenda enjoys Unique's nocturnal music-making so much that she finds it very hard to get one song out of her mind. All day she flutters her luscious eyelashes and swings her hips to its rhythm. What musical number is it?

Answer: Stop, in the Name of Love

Ah, the lovely Brenda. So talented. So beautiful. So full of Wonder (as one would expect from a Wonder camel!)
