Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How old was Almanzo during the Christmas we read of in 'Farmer Boy'?

Answer: nearly 10

Almanzo would have been ten years old just over a month later.
2. What was the main meat for the meal on Christmas Day in 'Farmer Boy'?

Answer: goose

'He looked at the crisp. crackling little pig lying on the blue platter with an apple in its mouth. He loked at the fat roast goose, the drumsticks sticking up, and the edges of dressing curling out.'
3. Almanzo was delighted to get a pocket knife that Christmas, but at what time in the morning did he wake everyone up?

Answer: before half past three

Father called down to the children at half past three, after the children had opened their presents, so they had to have woken up long before then.
4. Mary and Laura made 'pictures' in the show in the Big Woods with their cousins who came for Christmas. Who were the cousins?

Answer: Alice, Ella and Peter

Lansford, Laura and Polly were Pa's brother and sister; George and James were Pa's uncles, brothers to his father, Lansford; Lena and Gus were Laura's cousins by different uncle and aunt (and Ellie was drafted in to make all the answers three names!)
5. What did Laura name the doll Santa gave her for Christmas in the Big Woods?

Answer: Charlotte

Laura kept Charlotte all her life. There was a brief period when she belonged to the little girl who lived on a neighbouring farm when they lived on Plum Creek, but she returned to Laura. When Laura packed her trunk to leave home on her wedding day, Charlotte was carefully packed inside.
6. What did Pa give Ma that Christmas in the Big Woods?

Answer: a shelf-bracket for the shepherdess

Along with the shepherdess, the intricately carved shelf-bracket travelled with the family across states to their final home in De Smet. No one seems certain what happened to the shepherdess.
7. Who met Santa Claus in Independence?

Answer: Mr Edwards

Christmas on the prairie was not white - it was wet. Very, very wet. Ma and Pa were working out how to make Christmas special with the white sugar when Mr Edwards appeared, having walked all the way from Independence with presents for the girls. He told them he met Santa and agreed to bring the presents with him.
8. What did Santa give the girls the Christmas they spent on the prairie?

Answer: a penny, a cup, a cake and candy

Mr Edwards brought (we surmise) a cup and a stick of candy each, Ma would have made the cake (with white sugar) and Ma and Pa would have put the pennies in the stockings as well. Mr Edwards also brought some sweet potatoes from Independence for the whole family.
9. What present did Laura get from the Christmas Tree at Walnut Grove?

Answer: a muff and cape

Laura had been envious of Nellie's muff, and was delighted to receive this present, especially as it came with a fur cape as well. Rev Alden said she was a little brown bird with red trimmings.
10. What was the special present the family received the Christmas after the one when there was a Christmas Tree in the church?

Answer: Pa being home safe and well after being lost in a blizzard

The family agreed to have horses the Christmas before the Christmas Tree Christmas. Every year they had candy, except this one - because Pa had eaten it and the oyster crackers while he was holed up during the blizzard. He brought home the oysters though, and they had them for Christmas dinner.
11. Who came for the Christmas celebrations in the surveyor's house?

Answer: Mr and Mrs Boast

Rob and Ellie Boast arrived on Christmas Eve and the two families became friends after they spent the remainder of the winter as close neighbours.
12. What did Grace get for Christmas when they were in the surveyor's house?

Answer: a swan's hood coat

Pa had shot a swan by accident and Ma had made the coat with help from Mary, Laura and Carrie. 'A bit of the blue silk lining showed around Grace's face and matched her shining eyes. She touched the soft swan's-down on her wrists, and waved her hands and laughed.'
13. What did they have for Christmas Dinner at the surveyor's house?

Answer: rabbit

'This is the first time we ever had jack rabbit for Christmas dinner,' Pa said. 'The other time we lived where jack rabbits grow, they were too common, we had them every day. For Christmas we had wild turkey.'
14. What did Ma and the girls buy for Pa's Christmas present during the Long Winter?

Answer: braces (suspenders)

Mr Hawthorn only had dull grey braces for sale, but Mr Loftus sold Laura and Carrie a fine set of blue braces, with small red flowers machine-woven along them and bright brass buckles. They cost 25c.
15. After dinner of oyster soup the girls settled down with the bundle of 'Youth's Companions' to read as a Christmas treat. Pa was not with them - what was he doing?

Answer: twisting hay into sticks

This was the first time they twisted hay into sticks. This would be their only fuel for the next four months. Christmas Day saw the last backing of bread made with flour and the last of the kerosene.
16. What did Mary send home to the family for her present to them all the Christmas after the Long Winter?

Answer: a letter

The family had sent a big package to her for her Christmas, and she sent a letter she had written herself in return. She had written it using a grooved, metal slate; by feeling the grooves she could form the letters with a pencil.
17. Laura's present from her parents that year was not a surprise, as she had come across the book when she was packing to move to town that autumn. Where had it been hidden?

Answer: the bottom drawer of Ma's bureau

It was a book of Tennyson's Poems.
18. Something unexpected happened on Christmas Eve 1882, the year Laura was fifteen. What was it?

Answer: Laura became a teacher

Following the successful School Exhibition the day before (from which Almanzo Wlder walked Laura home), Mr Brewster wished to hire her as a teacher. He brought Mr Williams, who examined Laura and gave her a third-grade certificate. She was to turn sixteen about six weeks later.
19. There was a Christmas tree at church the next year. What surprise present did Laura receive from this tree?

Answer: a hairbrush and comb set

'Then Pa leaned to admire it, too, and his eyes twinkled. 'I could not swear who gave it to you, Laura,' he said. 'But I can tell you one thing. I saw Almanzo Wilder buying that very case in Bradley's drugstore.'
20. Who arrived, totally unexpectedly, on Christmas Eve the very next year, as the family were preparing the house on the homestead for Christmas?

Answer: Almanzo Wilder

Almanzo had returned from the east sooner than expected, and his first stop was the Ingalls' homestead and Laura.

'Oh, Laura,' Carrie said, as Laura blew out the lamp in the bedroom. 'Isn't this the nicest Christmas! Do Christmasses get better all the time?' 'Yes,' Laura said. 'They do.'
