Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. You are sleeping in bed and you hear a noise that sounds a lot like somebody asking the question "Who?" Who could be making this noise?

Answer: Owl

Owls are nocturnal birds. That means they are usually only awake at night. Owls eat small rodents like mice, rats, chipmunks and squirrels.
2. It's the middle of the night and you hear a banging that sounds like trash cans being smashed. You look outside and see a furry little critter that looks like it's wearing a mask. Who could this little bandit be?

Answer: Raccoon

Although raccoons look cute and friendly, do not go near them. Raccoons can be very aggressive and could bite you if they feel threatened.
3. Phew!!! What is that smell? You look outside your window to see a short fat cat-like thing with a stripe down its back. What did you just see?

Answer: Skunk

Skunks are very good at finding their way home. There are many stories of skunks that have been taken miles away from their homes just to turn back up a few days later. If you see or smell a skunk, it's best to call animal control quickly.
4. You hear a rustling in the attic so you have your dad look inside. All of a sudden you hear a screeching noise and see a dark creature flying around. What is the name of this flying mammal?

Answer: Bat

Bats are the only flying mammals. Although many people seem to think bats are blind, its not true. Bats can see well enough, they just tend to rely on their other senses, especially their hearing.
5. You look out your window and notice that it's a full moon and you hear a spooky howl. What member of the dog family is making this noise?

Answer: Coyote

Although cartoons taught us that coyotes hunt road runners, there is no evidence that this is true. Coyotes usually eat small mammals such as mice and squirrels and also eat insects and fruit.
6. When vacationing in Australia you peek out your hotel window and see a cute little "bear" munching on some eucalyptus leaves. Who might this little guy be?

Answer: Koala

Although koalas are often called bears, they are actually more closely related to wombats.
7. When you get back from Australia to your house in the USA, you decide to do some after dark exploring in the woods behind your house. While stepping around a tree you see a spiky little critter running away from you. Who could this be?

Answer: Porcupine

The porcupine's quills are actually hairs that are coated with keratin to make them stiff. Don't worry too much though; porcupines cannot shoot their quills at you.
8. While cleaning out the garage, you notice some sticky silk. What large, night dwelling arachnid might have made it?

Answer: Tarantula

Tarantulas come in many sizes. The smallest are about the size of a fingernail and the largest can be as big as a dinner plate. Although they seem quite scary, tarantulas are pretty non-aggressive and there are no known fatalities attributed to tarantulas. While tarantulas don't usually make webs, they do spin silk, which they use to line the inside of the place where they live.
9. Late at night while trying to sleep you keep hearing this chirping noise. What creature, known as nature's thermometer, is making this noise?

Answer: Cricket

If you count the number of chirps by a cricket in 14 seconds and add 40, you will get the approximate air temperature in degrees Fahrenheit.
10. While cleaning your room you notice some chewed up wires and a hole in the baseboard of your bedroom. You want to get a trap to catch this furry little rodent but first you have to identify it. What type of animal is this?

Answer: Mouse

Mice are nocturnal creatures that have poor eyesight. They tend to rely on their hearing and sense of smell to detect food and predators.
