Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The song "I Can Sing a Rainbow" mentions several colors. Which one mentioned in the song is not actually part of the rainbow?

Answer: Pink

The seven colors that are in a rainbow are: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet.

"I Can Sing a Rainbow" was written by Arthur Hamilton in 1955. A popular cover of the song was performed by Andy Williams. The song was also used as the theme song of "Captain Noah and His Magical Ark" (a long-running children's television show in the Philadelphia, PA, area).

Did you notice that the pink shape is a circle and the other orange, green, and blue shapes are squares?
2. The song "Bingo Was His Name-O" talks about a farmer and his animal. What type of animal was Bingo?

Answer: Dog

The earliest forms of this song go back to the 1700s. This can be a fun song to sing with a group as you gradually replace the letters of Bingo's name (when you spell it) with claps:

B-I-N-G-O, then (clap)-I-N-G-O, then (clap)-(clap)-N-G-O, etc.

I hope you could tell my drawing was of a bone, which you might imagine a dog might chew.
3. In "Old MacDonald Had a Farm", what five letters are repeated after the initial line of the song and after the third line indicating which animal is on the farm?

Answer: E-I-E-I-O

The earliest forms of this song go back to the 1700s, but the form that we would recognize goes back to the early 1900s. In each verse after the first, the list of animals includes both a new animal and the ones that were previously mentioned.

In the drawing I included two eyes (or "I"s) which I hoped would have you choose the only set of letters where "I" was used twice.
4. In one popular song, the singer describes him/herself as a liquid container that is "short and stout". Which kind of container?

Answer: Teapot

"I'm a Little Teapot" was written by George Henry Saunders and Clarence Kelly in 1941. The singer usually performs simple gestures with the song including holding out one arm as the teapot's "spout" and placing the hand of the other arm on the hip to simulate the "handle".

In the picture I included a rebus to (hopefully) lead you to the word "teapot".
5. In the song "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" what is the star said to look like?

Answer: A Diamond

The poem "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" was written as a poem by Jane Taylor in 1806 and is sung to an eighteenth-century French tune. The term "twinkling" refers to the star's brightness changing. In his book "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland", Lewis Carroll included a parody poem entitled "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Bat".

In the picture I included a simple baseball diamond.
6. In the nursery rhyme/song "The Itsy Bitsy Spider", the spider is attempting to climb a water spout. What blocks the spider's attempt?

Answer: The rain

The rain "washes" the spider out and after the sun re-appears and "dries out the rain" (and the spider, I assume) the spider re-starts his attempt. "The Itsy Bitsy Spider" can be found in various nursery rhyme collections of the 1900s.

In the picture I tried to include a rain cloud and hoped the umbrella would be another clue.
7. In a song subtitled "Bicycle Built for Two", a man is asking a woman to marry him. What flower name does the woman have?

Answer: Daisy

"Daisy Bell (Bicycle Built for Two)" was written in 1892 by Harry Dacre. The titular Daisy is addressed by name several times in the song. The song has been covered by many musicians and groups including the Chipmunks and even makes an appearance in the 1968 film "2001: A Space Odyssey".

In the picture I tried to draw a daisy. I hope I didn't do too badly.
8. In "The Chipmunk Song (Christmas Don't Be Late)", Alvin expresses his wish to get a particular toy. What was it?

Answer: A Hula-Hoop

"The Chipmunk Song (Christmas Don't Be Late)" was a number one hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for the Chipmunks in 1959. The single sold 4.5 million copies in its first seven weeks of release. The sound of the Chipmunks was created by David Seville (stage name of Ross Bagdasrian) recording his normal singing voice and then playing back the recording at a faster rate of speed, creating a higher-pitched sound.

In the picture, I tried to show a person using a hula-hoop. Hula-hoops were popular toys in the late 1950s.
9. In the nursery rhyme, "The Grand Old Duke of York", what does the Duke have the soldiers do?

Answer: They march up and down a hill.

Dating back to the 1600s, there are several candidates for the Duke of York described in the song. This song is often performed with actions--the singers stand at the word "up" and sit at the word "down". The number of the Duke's soldiers that are marching can also change from verse to verse.

In the picture, I hoped to suggest a hill or hills with the arrows pointing up and down.
10. In the song "The Wheels on the Bus", what do the wheels do?

Answer: They Go Round and Round

"The Wheels on the Bus" was written by Verna Hills in about 1939. Following verses often describe the wipers, the horn, and the people on the bus.

I included a wheel in the drawing that is going in a circle (round).
