Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When you see someone in the cupboard, who else can you spy?

Answer: Mother Hubbard

"Tom Thumb in the cupboard / I spy Mother Hubbard"

Tom Thumb, wearing a blue top, trousers and cap, is sitting in the cupboard on a tin of dogfood, eating strawberry jam from the jar with a spoon. There is a little dog under the table. We can just see Mother Hubbard's back as she is bending over, possibly to take something out of the oven. The orchard is still visible through the open door, with a basket of plums on a box just inside.
2. When you see someone down the cellar, who else can you spy?

Answer: Cinderella

"Mother Hubbard down the cellar / I spy Cinderella"

Mother Hubbard, in her spotted yellow dress, has gone down to the cellar to fetch a large pie-dish. The dog is waiting for her at the top of the steps. The cellar is used for storing many things, including a green hosepipe, a bucket of logs, a rolled up carpet and a mangle. In the corner, behind a pile of a suitcase with a box of flowerpots on top, we can just see Cinderella using a feather duster on a shelf full of jars and bottles.
3. When you see someone on the stairs, who else can you spy?

Answer: The Three Bears

"Cinderella on the stairs / I spy the Three Bears"

Cinderella, wearing a patched blue skirt, is still cleaning, but she has moved up to the main room of the cottage. She is using her feather duster on the ornaments on the mantelpiece above a range where a kettle is waiting to boil. She has a green broom and a bucket with a blue cloth for heavier cleaning. The little dog is asleep on a pink cushion on the sofa. Through the small square window, we can just spot the heads of the Three Bears wearing maroon hats.
4. When you see someone out hunting, who else can you spy?

Answer: Baby Bunting

"Three Bears out hunting / I spy Baby Bunting"

The Three Bears are walking through the woods carrying their guns. They are wearing brown tweed suits and brown shoes. There are rabbits dancing round their feet. However, Baby Bear trips over a tree root causing his gun to go off unexpectedly. The bullet severs the cord holding Baby Bunting's crib so it is falling from the tree towards the river.
5. When you see someone fast asleep, who else can you spy?

Answer: Bo-Peep

"Baby Bunting fast asleep / I spy Bo-Peep"

Fortunately the crib floats, and Baby Bunting remains peacefully asleep floating past an interested frog on a lily pad towards a duck with four ducklings. There is a dragonfly hovering over the crib. In the cornfield on the far bank we can just see Bo-Peep, presumably looking for her sheep.
6. When you see someone up the hill, who else can you spy?

Answer: Jack and Jill

"Bo-Peep up the hill / I spy Jack and Jill"

Bo-Peep, wearing a yellow dress and a mauve bonnet decorated with flowers, is sitting on the edge of a well at the top of a hill. She has her crook in her left hand, and is peering around looking for the lost sheep. Two little blue birds are sitting, one on the roof of the well and the other on its handle. Half way down the hill there are two pairs of legs sticking up from the long grass, presumably those of Jack and Jill, who would have been climbing up to the well for a pail of water.
7. When you see someone in the ditch, who else can you spy?

Answer: The Wicked Witch

"Jack and Jill in the ditch / I spy the Wicked Witch"

Jack and Jill have fallen into a bramble patch by a stone wall at the bottom of the long grass. Jack is wearing a blue and white striped top and red dungarees. Jill has a blue and purple bodice with a red skirt and white apron. The empty pail is lying next to them. Behind the tangle of brambles, we can just see the pointed black hat, hooked nose and claw-like hand of the Wicked Witch.
8. When you see someone over the wood, who else can you spy?

Answer: Robin Hood

"Wicked Witch over the wood / I spy Robin Hood"

The Wicked Witch, who is wearing a dark grey dress, black stockings and purple shoes as well as her pointed hat, is riding a broomstick over the wood. Her cat is clinging on behind looking alarmed, as well he might, since a man clad in Lincoln green (Robin Hood) is firing arrows at them from the trees below. The four blue birds in the sky are keeping well clear.
9. When you see someone in his den, who else can you spy?

Answer: The Bears again

"Robin Hood in his den / I spy the Bears again"

Robin Hood, still wearing his green clothes and hat, is sitting on a pink cushion amongst the tree roots reading a book. A picture and a shelf, with a vase of flowers, are attached to a nearby tree trunk. There is a campfire burning merrily. His dapple grey horse is tethered nearby and his quiver, full of arrows, is by his side. There are two little white rabbits looking a bit worried as the Three Bears are wandering through the distant tree trunks. Once again, Baby Bear has tripped up, discharging his gun accidentally.
10. When you see someone still hunting, who do they spy?

Answer: Baby Bunting

"Three Bears still hunting / THEY spy Baby Bunting"

The Three Bears are crossing an arched stone bridge over the river when they spot Baby Bunting, now awake in his crib, wedged in some bullrushes next to the bridge. They put the guns down safely out of harm's way, and Daddy Bear uses a hooked stick to pull the crib to safety, watched by an interested pair of ducks.

"Baby Bunting safe and dry / I spy Plum Pie"

The Three Bears carry Baby Bunting towards Mother Hubbard's cottage, where we can see a large pie on a blue checked cloth in the orchard outside.

"Plum Pie in the sun I spy . . ."
Cinderella is in a pear tree dusting the top of Jill who is standing behind its trunk. Jack is in the branches of a peach tree; Robin Hood is riding his horse up behind that tree. The Three Bears, still carrying Baby Bunting are just visible behind two plum trees. The Wicked Witch can be seen behind the pear tree, flying in on her broomstick. Bo-Peep, now accompanied by her sheep, is walking over a distant hill. Tom Thumb is sitting on the cloth behind the cream jug. Mother Hubbard is just coming into view with a big pile of plates for everyone's pie.
