Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is Judy's real name?

Answer: Helen

Judy is also known as "Fizz" by her brother Pip.
2. What are the children forbidden from going to?

Answer: pantomime

They are forbidden from the pantomime because of the incident with the roast fowl, and the Digby-Smiths end up going instead!
3. Bunty's real name is John.

Answer: true

I'm not sure where they got Bunty from as a nickname.
4. Where is Judy sent "next Monday morning"?

Answer: boarding school

Another book by Ethel Turner catalogues Judy's time at boarding school in Mount Victoria: "Judy and Punch"!
5. Meg tries tight-lacing.

Answer: true

This is suggested by her close friend Aldith McCarthy who is one year older than Meg and who knows "crowds of gentlemen".
6. Judy preferred the merry-go-round to the switch-back at the fair.

Answer: false

Pip enjoyed the merry-go-round, and Judy spent a whole shilling on the switchback. They had gone to the Bondi Aquarium, without permission, leaving The General at the Barracks with their father. This escapade ended in Judy being sent to boarding school.
7. Why is Esther a potentially controversial wife for Captain Woolcott?

Answer: she is only 20

Meg the eldest of the seven was only 16.
8. Meg gives Mr Gillet a blue ribbon.

Answer: true

She gives him the ribbon so that he will think of her and refrain from going on drinking "benders".
9. What did Judy suffer from that forced the family to go to the country?

Answer: lung damage

Judy escaped from boarding school, and spent "nearly a week" walking home (77 miles)! The sleeping rough in the rain did lots of damage to her lungs, and she had to be moved away from the sea air.
10. Judy is really her Father's favourite.

Answer: false

Her father is really bewildered trying to manage her. Before her mother died, she asked Captain Woolcott to "be careful of Judy", but he doesn't know how. If any of the children could be said to be his favourite, it is Nell.
11. How many miles on the train is it to Yarrahappini?

Answer: 300

It is an all night train trip, and the Captain could not afford eight sleeping berths, so it was an uncomfortable journey.
12. Baby's real name is Elinor.

Answer: false

Her real name is Winifred.
13. Nellie begs fowl from her father when there is company for dinner.

Answer: true

As do Meg and Pip. Bunty tries, but comes back to the nursery with feathered potatoes instead!
14. Who is Judy trying to save when the tree falls on her?

Answer: The General

The children are at a picnic at Yarrahappini (their step-mothers childhood home), and a ring-barked tree blows over, narrowly missing The General, but breaking Judy's back.
15. How many "Little Australians" remain at the end of the book?

Answer: 6

One of the most heart-rending scenes I've ever read!
