The cook's name is Joanna, but she does not feature in this book as she is ill, which is why the children have to go off camping - there is no-one at Kirrin Cottage to look after them.

Richard realises he has to escape from the dangerous men. The children overhear that the car will soon be leaving for town. Richard decides to hide in the boot, and get help.

The children are given pound notes by Mr Perton after it is discovered Dick is not who they are looking for. But the children don't want them, and so give them to Aggie, who is very old and poor, but has looked after them well.
