Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What day do they travel to Kirrin?

Answer: Tuesday

The children - Julian Dick and Anne - are going to stay with their Aunt Fanny, Uncle Quentin and Georgina, their cousin, who they have never met, for their summer holidays. They travel to Kirrin by car. It is a lovely day, when they set off.
2. What is the main feature of the rocky island?

Answer: Ruined castle

Georgina hates being a girl, and refuses to answer to her real name, so everybody calls her George. George is the same age as Dick - eleven. She is a year younger than Julian and a year older than Anne. She is not pleased that her cousins have come to stay.

She has short, curly hair. Her father tells George that she is to show her cousins around Kirrin Bay. There is a lovely beach for the children to go bathing. George does so, unwillingly. There is a rocky island near Kirrin Bay, only accessible by boat. George surprises the cousins by announcing that the island will be hers one day.

There is even a shipwreck, at the bottom of the sea. It really belongs to her mother, but her mother says that George can have it for herself.
3. Where did George find Timmy?

Answer: On the moors

George introduces her cousins to Timothy (better known as Timmy) the dog. Timmy is a mongrel. George used to have Timmy at home, but he was naughty, and her father disliked him. So George pays a fisher boy, Alf, to care for and feed Timmy. Her parents do not know this, and George swears her cousins to secrecy. Timmy is her best friend.
4. Who suggests spending a night or two on the island, just the four of them, and Timmy?

Answer: Julian

George takes her cousins to see the shipwreck. They don't have time to land on the island but the cousins see the ruined castle from a distance. George shows them how to tell they are exactly over the wreck, by lining up a nearby church spire and the tip of the hill over the castle. Julian and George dive into the sea, to see the wreck more closely.
5. What side is the little cove on the island, where George lands the boat?

Answer: East

George has agreed to take her cousins to the island, but is uncertain, as there is a storm on its way. However, her cousins persuade her, even though Anne does not like storms.
6. Who sees the wreck, washed up, first?

Answer: Julian

The children explore the half ruined castle. George says that perhaps there were dungeons in the castle at one time, but it is so overgrown that they'll never find them. There is an ominous rumble of thunder...the children are trapped on the island. The children and Timmy shelter in the only complete room of the ruined castle and build a fire of sticks and sandwich paper. Julian goes out to admire the storm, and sees that it has washed up the shipwreck, onto the rocks. George and the others sail back to Kirrin.

They plan to get up at dawn the next day, and explore the wreck thoroughly, before anyone else hears it has been washed up. They all go to bed early.
7. What was George's great-great-great-grandfather's middle name?

Answer: John

The next day, the children explore the wreck. The children find a wooden box, inside a cupboard, on the wreck. It has the initials H.J.K - Henry John Kirrin. The box must have belonged to George's great-great-great-grandfather's. The children take the locked box back to Kirrin Cottage with them, to open it.
8. What was in the box?

Answer: Old papers and a book

The children throw the box out of the attic window, to open it. Uncle Quentin takes the box from them but Julian takes it from the study, while his Uncle is asleep. One of the old papers is a map of Kirrin castle, with a diagram of the dungeons. In one corner of the dungeons is written "ingots".

Ingots are bars of metal. The children guess this means that this is where the gold is hidden. The map is in three parts. The children make a copy of the map before replacing it in the box.
9. Where does Julian find George, when she learns that Kirrin Island is to be sold?

Answer: In the tool shed

The wreck brings sightseers to Kirrin Island. George is annoyed when her father sells the tin lined box to a antiques dealer, but when she learns that the antique dealer is also buying Kirrin Island and turning the ruined castle into a hotel, she is devastated.

Her parents need money. Julian and the others are allowed to spend a day or two on the island, before it is sold. Julian thinks the antique dealer has also read the map and has brought the island to look for the ingots. The children plan to find them first.
10. What is the first thing Julian puts on the list of things to take to Kirrin Island?

Answer: Food

Julian says that if they are going to find the dungeons, they will need to dig. They also take rugs and tools, as well as other things. George is pleased that she'll be able to spend all the time with Timmy, on the island. The children go to the island and examine the map again.

There seems to be a well that leads down to the dungeons. They begin to scrape away weeds from the stones, to find the entrance to the dungeons.
11. Who discovers the entrance to the dungeons?

Answer: Anne

Timmy finds the old well while chasing a rabbit and falling down it. He lands on a stone ledge, inside the well, instead of falling to the bottom of the well. George rescues him. Anne sits down, and finds, by accident, a stone slab with an iron ring through it.

The children lift the stone, and go down the stone steps, with their torches. They come to a wooden door, which is apart from the other dungeons, which is solid, and locked.
12. Where do Dick and Anne sit, while Julian goes back into the dungeons?

Answer: On the rocks

The next morning, the children go back into the dungeons, Julian taking an axe with him so they can break down the wooden door. A splinter of wood sticks into Dick's cheek. Julian, Anne and Dick go back into the open air. Then Julian goes back to help George break down the door. They finally do it - behind the door are the gold ingots. Julian says it is a small fortune.
13. What is the name of one of the men, who hold Julian and George prisoner?

Answer: Jake

Julian and George are horrified when two men discover them and the ingots. One of the men says that the castle, island and the ingots belong to him. He makes George write a note and send Timmy to fetch Anne and Dick; so all the children can be prisoners while they escape with the gold.

He has a gun, and threatens to shoot Timmy. Luckily, Dick notices that George has signed the note "Georgina", to warn them not to come down. Dick and Anne see that there is also a motorboat in the harbour, as well as their own.
14. Who tries to lock the men in the dungeons?

Answer: Dick

Dick slides down the well shaft, with a rope, after the two men have left, and rescues Julian, George and Timmy. The men had taken the oars of the children's boat away so they could not escape. When the two men return, they have another man with them, also a fishing boat to take away the gold ingots in.

The children hide, Dick in the well shaft. He plans to bolt the men in the dungeons, in the same place where they kept Julian, George and Timmy. His plan fails but he manages to escape. Georges tampers with the motorboat so that the men can't escape, finds the oars of her boat, and the children row for freedom.

They pass the fishing boat as they go.
15. Who says "What a brave thing to do!"?

Answer: Aunt Fanny

Everything ends happily. Although the men have escaped from the island by the other boat, they do not take the gold with them George is allowed to keep Timmy at home. Her parents are rich. Anne suggests that George goes to her boarding school. It allows the children to keep their own pets there, so George would not be apart from Timmy. Look out for more Famous Five quizzes soon!
