Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. My first dog was quite large with long, shaggy grey and white fur. I worried that she couldn't see because her hair covered her face and eyes. What was my dog Bonnie?

Answer: Old English sheepdog

Old English sheepdogs are herders bred to watch sheep. The puppies are born black and white; they get their grey or silver coats as they grow up. Although a fairly large breed, they are friendly and obedient making them a good family pet.
2. Penny was named for her color. She was a dog with a distinctive broad head and square muzzle. Bred in Germany, there is a common story that their name comes from their playful pawing at the air when up on their hindquarters. What was she?

Answer: Boxer

Boxers are in K9 police service and can be used as guard dogs, but are also a loyal family pet. The dogs were likely bred from an older breed, Boxl, where they got their name.
3. This breed was developed in Scotland to retrieve water fowl. They come in one color that can vary from very light to quite dark. They are described as gentle and loyal. What breed was my dog Ginger?

Answer: Golden retriever

Golden retrievers are popular therapy dogs and guide dogs. Their gentle disposition makes them great family pets. But watch out--they love the water and do not hesitate to go full tilt into any decent-sized body of water.
4. Gretchen was much smaller than the other dogs. Another German breed, they were bred to hunt badger and their breed name means badger dog in German. What was this fiercely friendly little dog?

Answer: Dachshund

Dachshunds come in many colors and 3 types of coats- smooth, long-haired and wire-haired. There are two universally recognized sizes, standard and minature. (Rabbit is also recognized as a third size in some areas outside the US). They are a big dog in a little body. Gretchen was a smooth coated standard red.
5. Keeshlan was larger than Gretchen, but smaller than all the other dogs. She had long ears and feathered withers. They were bred in England to flush gamebirds or woodcocks. What was Keeshlan?

Answer: Cocker spaniel

Cocker spaniels are described as "merry" little dogs. They make terrific family pets but have some health issues, especially with their long furry ears. Their name is likely derived from their sporting function--flushing field game or cocks.
6. My largest dog is described as the "Apollo of dogs". He is a giant breed. My dog, Winston, was a harlequin. The breed also has fawn, brindle, blue and black colors. What kind of dog was Winston?

Answer: Great Dane

There is some dispute whether the dogs were developed in Denmark as the name suggests or in Germany. Although very large, these are gentle loyal animals and quite protective. Due to their size, they are prone to health problems and usually only live 6-7 years.
7. Duchess was black and tan. These dogs are great at police K9 work, search and rescue and even military work sniffing for bombs. They are also popular as guide dogs, assist dogs and therapy dogs. What breed was Duchess and the TV and film star, Rin Tin Tin?

Answer: German shepherd

This intelligent breed is quick to learn and naturally protective. Early socialization and training make this dog a great family pet.
8. Another German breed, this dog is named for the town where it was developed. They were bred to pull carts. This is one of the strongest breeds and is happiest when it has a job to do. They are almost always black and tan. What was my dog Lady?

Answer: Rottweiler

From the German town of Rottweil, this breed was almost lost when railroads took over the tasks of moving livestock to market and pulling carts. World War I saw their introduction into military work and the breed thrived. Obedience training is very important for this breed who wants to please and needs to know their "job" in the family.
9. This Scottish setter is the true "black and tan" dog. The largest setter, they are beautifully feathered. The AKC describes them as "fearless, willing, intelligent and capable". What breed is my dog Dylan?

Answer: Gordon setter

The Duke of Gordon established the Black and Tan kennels in the early 1800s. Daniel Webster is said to have brought a Gordon setter to the US from the Duke's kennels in 1842. Dylan is friendly, talkative and a bundle of energy.
10. My puppy, Vae, is 10 weeks old. Typical of herding dogs, this breed is very intelligent and excels at agility, fly ball and other competitive sports. This medium sized breed comes in a variety of colors, including the distinctive merle, and often have bi-colored eyes.

Answer: Australian sheepdog

My puppy is red merle. There is debate that the dogs are called Australian because of the Australian shepherds who immigrated to the American West or perhaps the distinctive merle colors (blue and red) from Australian cattle dogs. She is very smart and very energetic. I hope she has the disposition to be trained as a therapy dog.
