Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What does Captain Flint intend doing with the "Sea Bear" before handing her back to his friend Mac?

Answer: Scape off the barnacles and paint her below the waterline.

A sheltered cove is needed so that they can run her aground and begin the work of "careening". This worthy intention leads to all the trouble and excitement that follows.
2. What is the name of the "bird-man's" boat?

Answer: Pterodactyl

At first Dick dreams that he would like to have a boat like the "Pterodactyl" so that he can cruise around looking at birds. However, he later learns that the owner is an egg-collector, the sort of person he most despises. The boat is now one of his nightmares.
3. What nautical equipment do they use to allow the "Sea Bear" to feel the way into the cove?

Answer: a lead-line

Nancy is the one who is throwing the lead and feeling for the bottom. When the lead touches the bottom it is then "armed" so that it brings up a bit of the bottom e.g. "Eleven fathoms and soft mud" or "Nine fathom. Mud and shell." are amongst the readings that Nancy gives out.
4. Which one of the Walkers, Blacketts and Callums is the one most called upon to start and stop the engine?

Answer: Roger

Unlike the others Roger doesn't despise engines. He is much more practically minded than his brother and sisters and certainly less romantic than Nancy or Peggy.
5. What do the exploring party find at the top of the very first hill that they climb?

Answer: a Pict-house

The four of them react in their characteristic ways. Dorothea thinks about including it in her latest story. Titty compares it to being in a bird's nest and Dick immediately begins to sketch it so that he can show his father. Roger begins to explore and finds a tin with some cake in and an exercise book.
6. What language is the exercise book written in?

Answer: Gaelic

Titty immediately thinks of "A Savage Gael" and tells Roger to put the book back immediately. She feels it is wrong to be prying into what could be someone's private diary.
7. What did Titty, Dorothea and Roger pretend to be when they thought they were being followed?

Answer: They pretended to be geologists tapping at stones.

It turns out later that the local people thought they were deliberately driving the deer from one place to another. The deer are already behaving rather nervously before they even start tapping at the stones.
8. Which bird does Dick see that has two striped patches on its neck?

Answer: The Great Northern Diver

Dick sees all four types of bird on or near the two small lochs but it is the unusual neck markings that convince him that it is a Great Northern diver. Unfortunately he takes his information to Mr. Jemmerling the egg-collector.
9. Complete this saying quoted by Mr. Jemmerling: "What's hit's history and what's missed's ......."

Answer: mystery

Mr.Jemmerling has no interest in the birds himself beyond the fact that they can make a name for himself. He will take the eggs and shoot the birds. The Great Northern divers nesting in Scotland are more important as a freakish fact than as living, breeding birds who deserve their chance for life.
10. How does "The Egg-Collector" cook "his own goose"?

Answer: He tries to bribe Captain Flint and succeeds in making him angry.

When Mr. Jemmerling comes alongside the "Sea Bear" he climbs aboard without being asked. Then he tries to get information out of Captain Flint. His attempt at bribery convinces Captain Flint that he must change his mind and go back to the bay near where the divers are nesting. If Jemmerling had done nothing Captain Flint would have gone home.
11. Why did Titty want a bucket of water?

Answer: She wanted to wash the deck where Jemmerling had stood.

Titty is not alone in thinking that the "Sea Bear" has been contaminated by having Mr.Jemmerling on board. Captain Flint decides that Jemmerling is not "mad" but "bad".
12. In the harbour of the little town why did Captain Flint move the "Sea Bear" to a mooring buoy?

Answer: So he could slip away quietly later without raising the anchor.

Captain Flint suspected that Jemmerling in the "Pterodactyl" would try to follow them. He wanted to be able to slip away quietly without the noise of raising the anchor. As soon as they start their engine "Pterodactyl" starts as well and they look ready to follow them. Early next morning they slip away in the darkness.
13. What were the words written on the sandwich paper and stuck into the ground near the sleeping Roger?

Answer: "The Sleeping Beauty"

Of course it is particularly galling for Roger that he fell asleep when he was meant to be on guard duty. The previous disturbed night as they sailed away to escape from Mr.Jemmerling is the main reason for his tiredness. Ian, the young Scottish boy, is the one that caught Roger napping.
14. Who goes with Dick to place the "hide" on the island in the dark?

Answer: John

The hide has been made by creating netting and then covering it with heather. Peggy's original suggestion of a tree for a hide was treated with contempt as there wasn't a tree for miles around. The birds would be frightened if one suddenly sprang up overnight.
15. Which two of the children act as decoys to draw the egg-collector and his sailors away from Dick?

Answer: John and Nancy

John is the main decoy because he has been disguised with burnt cork being used to suggest Dick's spectacles. Nancy goes along to call out the name "Dick" at intervals so that the enemy will believe they are on the right trail.
