Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Before you can do anything in Charms, you need to get a wand. Which of the following four things does Mr. Ollivander NOT say he uses as the cores of his wands? (from "The Sorcerer's Stone")

Answer: Centaur hairs

Harry's wand has a tail feather from Fawkes, Professor Dumbledore's phoenix, and so does Lord Voldemort's.
2. In several books, wizards and witches use a charm that produces what they call "Stunners," effectively knocking out anyone it is aimed at. What is the incantation for the spell?

Answer: Stupefy

Ministry wizards use this charm to attempt to find the person who conjured the Dark Mark in "Goblet of Fire." Expelliarmus is The Disarming Charm, Locomotor Mortis is the Leg-Locking Curse, and Obliviate the Charm that wipes out memories; the only charm Professor Lockhart has ever mastered.
3. If Apparation goes wrong and leaves half of you behind, what has happened to you? (from "The Goblet of Fire")

Answer: Splinched

Arthur Weasley says that several wizards and witches have done this to themselves in the past, which is why Apparating is taught so carefully. It was quite a mess for the Ministry of Magic to sort out.
4. Who wrote the Standard Books of Spells Grades 1 and 2? ("Sorcerer's Stone" and "Chamber of Secrets")

Answer: Miranda Goshawk

Professor Lockhart has written many books about "his" exploits, Remus Lupin was a friend of James Potter, and Nicolas Flamel owned the only Sorcerer's Stone.
5. Which of these spells/effects will NOT harm or freeze the person that it is used on? ("Sorcerer's Stone" and "Goblet of Fire")

Answer: Priori Incantatem

Priori Incantatem is what can happen when brother wands meet, as it did with Harry and Voldemort in Book 4.
6. Which of these spells was not used by Draco or Harry during their duel in "The Chamber of Secrets"?

Answer: Petrificus Totalus

Petrificus Totalus is the charm Hermione uses on Neville in "The Sorcerer's Stone" when he refuses to allow them to leave Gryffindor Tower after dark. Neville wins 10 points for Gryffindor for having the courage to stand up to his friends.

In the movie, Draco uses Everte Statum instead of Tarantallegra.
7. Which of the following names is NOT one of the Unforgivable Curses? ("Goblet of Fire")

Answer: The Kedavra Curse

Although the words of the charm are Avada Kedavra, it is not The Kedavra Curse because Moody specifically names it as Avada Kedavra. (It is also known as The Killing Curse.) This was how Voldemort killed Harry's parents, and how he attempted to kill Harry when he was a baby.
8. What charm is countered by the "Quietus" charm? ("Goblet of Fire")

Answer: Sonorus

Sonorus is what Ludo uses at the World Cup to amplify his voice to carry over the stadium. It appears to be a difficult charm to use, for whenever Lee Jordan announces for Quiddich games at Hogwarts, he merely uses a magicly amplified microphone.
9. What charm will show invisible ink in "Chamber of Secrets"? (No, this does not refer to the Marauder's Map.)

Answer: Aparecium

Hermione uses Aparecium to see if the diary Harry found was written with invisible ink.
10. What charm requires the use of a Secret-Keeper? ("Prisoner of Azkaban")

Answer: Fidelius Charm

The Fidelius Charm was used by James and Lily Potter to attempt to hide from Lord Voldemort. It would have worked if their Secret-Keeper hadn't been an agent of Voldemort.
