Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first video game I ever played was very simple--I controlled a paddle and tried to knock a ball past the other player's paddle. Do you know the name of this game?

Answer: Pong

"Pong" came out in 1972, and I had a home version of it when Atari came out with the Color TV Game 6 in 1977. It's very simple, and I spent hours playing it against my brother (he usually won).
2. Sometime in the 1970s, my parents bought something for the kitchen that made cooking much, much quicker. Over 90% of all homes have one now, but only one family in a hundred owned one in 1971. Do you know what I'm talking about?

Answer: Microwave oven

Our microwave oven seemed like a miracle to me--it cooked a hot dog in just a few seconds, and it warmed up my dad's coffee when it got cold! The one we had was very big and made a very loud noise, but it was worth it, just for baked potatoes!
3. When I was a kid, I ate a lot of candy, and when I was six, a new candy came out--it was sold in a little pouch, the candy looked like pebbles, and it fizzed in your mouth when you ate it. Can you guess what this candy was called?

Answer: Pop Rocks

Pop Rocks were made the same kind of way that soda pop is made--a gas called 'carbon dioxide' was trapped in the candy, and when you put the candy in your mouth the candy broke up and let the gas out. On the front of the candy package was "Taste the explosion!"
4. In 1976 there was a funny song that was played a lot on the radio, and it was about a kind of bird who liked a kind of music. Can you figure out what it was called?

Answer: Disco Duck

The song "Disco Duck" was written by a radio disc jockey named Rick Dees, and it was very popular--it even hit Number One on the chart of popular music! The singer sounded a little like Donald Duck, and the song was about him dancing at a party and finding that everyone else at the party liked his dance so much that they all started to do it too!
5. One of the TV shows I used to watch when I was a kid was about an astronaut who got into a crash and got hurt. The scientists spent a lot of money and fixed him up, though, with body parts like a robot would have. Do you know what this show was called?

Answer: The Six Million Dollar Man

"The Six Million Dollar Man" was also called the Bionic Man ('bionic' means both machine and human), and he had mechanical legs, one mechanical arm and a mechanical eye that let him see really far, run really fast and be really strong. Later on, the television show introduced a bionic dog named Max!
6. When I was a kid in America in the late 1970s, there was a shortage of something very important for cars. Can you guess what it was that we ran short of?

Answer: Gasoline

There was a shortage of gasoline when I was a kid, and in my state you could only buy gas every other day--our license plate ended with an odd number, so we could only buy gas on odd-numbered days. People even stole gasoline from each other's cars.
7. We used to go to movies when I was a kid, and some theaters were out in the open air--you took your car to the movies, watched them on a big, outdoor screen and listened to the sound on your car radio! What do you think these theaters were called?

Answer: Drive-ins

The drive-in theaters were a lot of fun--a lot of people came early and had picnics and played Frisbee in the big gravel parking area, and the snack bar was a separate building that sold hot dogs and popcorn (and frozen bon bons--my favorite!). Some places still have drive-in theaters, but they're not as popular as they used to be.
8. When I was eight years old I waited in a line that stretched around the block, just so that I could see a cool new science fiction movie. What movie had characters like Obi-Wan Kenobi and R2D2 in it?

Answer: Star Wars

"Star Wars" came out in 1977, and I saw it ten times that summer. Over the years, more Star Wars movies came out (you've probably seen some or all of them), and now there are video games, toys and books about the people in the movies--there are several hundred books out there set in the Star Wars universe.
9. I remember that I used to watch sports on television as a kid, and I liked one sport better than all the others. Can you think of my favorite sport if I tell you that I watched Terry Bradshaw playing quarterback, Too Tall Jones playing defensive end, and Ray Guy playing punter?

Answer: American football

In the 1970s, the best teams were the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Dallas Cowboys, the Miami Dolphins and the Oakland Raiders. American football is not like soccer, which the rest of the world calls 'football'--you can use your hands to throw and catch the ball, and you have to wear helmets and pads.
10. I used to come home from school and turn on cartoons on the television. One of my favorite cartoons was about a gang of kids who solved crimes with the help of their Great Dane dog. Do you know the name of this dog?

Answer: Scooby-Doo

Scooby-Doo started in 1969, and showed the adventures of Shaggy, Scooby, Fred, Daphne and Velma. When I was ten, the show introduced Scooby's nephew, Scrappy-Doo.
