Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. About what percentage of all animals are invertebrates?

Answer: 95%

Invertebrates are animals that have no backbones. That means only 5% of animals have backbones. Invertebrates can live in all types of habitats, mostly the ocean or other water sources. Some change through metamorphosis as they grow.
2. Which of these invertebrates has no organs, including a brain, and lives mostly in the ocean, but can't swim very well on its own?

Answer: jellyfish

Jellyfish usually drift in the sea currents rather than actually swimming. Only some live in fresh water. Jellyfish can sting, but not all are deadly. Jellyfish melt on land.
3. Are sea spiders true spiders?

Answer: No

Sea spiders are invertebrates that live in the ocean. They have 8-12 legs. They go through a metamorphosis. Some of them eat coral.
4. Where are a snail's eyes located?

Answer: on the end of their tentacles

Snails are in a group of mollusks called gastropods. Slugs are also gastropods. Snails can live on land or in water. The biggest type of snail is the giant African land snail.
5. Which are bigger, dragonflies or damselflies?

Answer: dragonflies

Dragonflies and damselflies are related. They are both a type of insect and go though a metamorphosis. They are different in other ways, too, besides their size. Dragonflies catch their food in the air, whereas damselflies eat their food off of plants.
6. At what time of the year do robber crabs mate?

Answer: June - September

Female robber crabs have hundreds of eggs at this time. Crabs are a type of crustacean. Robber crabs live on islands in the Pacific and Indian Oceans. Robber crabs are also known as coconut crabs.
7. If a starfish loses one of its arms the lost arm can grow back.

Answer: True

Sometimes the lost arm can grow into a new starfish. A new arm will grow in the place of the lost arm on the original animal. Starfish are echinoderms. Echinoderms live in the ocean.
8. What is the smallest type of butterfly?

Answer: western pygmy blue

A western pygmy blue's wingspan can get to be 3/8 of an inch, or one centimeter. They live in North America. The Queen Alexandra's birdwing is the biggest type of butterfly. Its wingspan can get up to one foot, or 30 centimeters.
9. There are exactly 19,000 species of spiders.

Answer: False

There are about 40,000 species of spiders. Spiders are arachnids. Spiders live on all continents, except Antarctica. Some spiders build webs to catch their food in. The biggest type of spider is the Goliath bird-eating tarantula.
10. Which can be poisonous to humans: millipedes or centipedes?

Answer: centipedes

Millipedes can have up to 375 pairs of legs! Centipedes can have up to 180 pairs of legs. Some millipedes and centipedes don't have eyes. The biggest type of centipede, the giant centipede, can get as long as 12 inches or 30 cm.
