Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which small insect species enjoy sharing picnics with people and eating their food crumbs?

Answer: ants

These small insects can be very pesky and annoying but they do lead remarkable lives. Ants live in a colony or a mound (anthill). There can be millions living in one area. They are strong and can carry food that weighs more than they do. Certain ants leave a scented trail when looking for food while others follow the same route behind.

The queen ant is the only female that has all of the babies. Others are called the workers, the males and soldier ants.
2. Which small food is oval, white and yellow inside, and is great to eat for breakfast?

Answer: eggs

The most common eggs come from chickens. Eggs contain protein and many vitamins and minerals that your body needs. Other eggs come from ducks, gull, quail, goose and many other animals. They are good pickled, scrambled, fried, hard or soft-boiled. Easter is an American holiday where many kids have fun dyeing and/or painting hard-boiled eggs and get together with lots of other people to have an Easter egg hunt.
3. Which pesky little creatures can irritate your pet dog or cat by biting them and making them scratch?

Answer: fleas

Fleas are very good jumpers which is their main way of getting around. Not only can they live on dogs and cats, but they can affect birds and humans too by feeding on their blood. If your pet is infested with these small pests, you should take it to the veterinarian who may suggest you treat your pet with some flea and tick powder and/or shampoo.
4. What do we call the small things that make up the white flurries that can fall from the sky in the winter?

Answer: snowflakes

An accumulation of frozen ice of different shapes and sizes form snowflakes which fall from the clouds and cover the ground in a blanket of white, wintry snow. Each separate snowflake is unique and many say that no two snowflakes are alike. This is a quote from Ms. Vesta Kelly that you may like to memorize and share with your friends.

"Snowflakes are one of nature's most fragile things, but just look at what they can do when they stick together."
5. What do we call a baby cat?

Answer: kitten

A momma cat will carry her babies inside her tummy for about two months. When they are born, it is very important that their mom keeps them warm and fed with her milk. This helps them from getting diseases so easily. After seven to ten days, a kitten opens its eyes and discovers a brand new world. Kittens are naturally playful and curious, so you will need to be certain that the kitten does not get around anything that could cause it harm. If you find a good home, it is recommended that the kitten stay with its mother until it is at least six to twelve weeks of age.
6. Before you are allowed to mail a letter, what small thing must you stick on the envelope in the upper right hand corner?

Answer: stamp

You have to buy stamps to put on your letters before the post office will send them to the location where you want them to be. This is known as a prepayment for mail. Most all of the small stamps sold today have a glue-like substance which is called self-adhesives.

It makes it very simple to apply to the envelope and you do not have to lick them and get an awful taste in your mouth. Many pictures have been printed on stamps such as presidents, actors, singers, animals, cartoon characters, inventors and writers, among many, many more.
7. Which of these birds are very tiny but can flap their delicate wings at a very high speed of 12 to 90 times per second?

Answer: hummingbird

Hummingbirds fly a long journey across the Gulf of Mexico to North America in the spring. Males always leave a couple of weeks before the females to search for a territory with plenty of food for them. They have a long, thin bill to extract the nectar from flowers.

The color red is known to attract these amazing birds. So hang out your feeders, always keep them clean and add fresh nectar often. You can buy pre-mix food or make your own. According to experts, hummingbirds can live up to three to four years.
8. Which of the following small things would you use to unlock a door or start the engine of a vehicle?

Answer: key

There are a variety of keys but the most common is the house and car key. These are usually used on a daily basis. A key is usually made of metal and has cut out notches and grooves to fit. Many people carry their keys on a key ring which comes in different patterns to suit your choice. It is believed that keys were invented in the 6th century B.C.
9. Which small-sized sugary confection was created by accident but has brought much enjoyment to children's taste buds over the years?

Answer: Bubble gum

When the pink-colored, distinctly-flavored Dubble Bubble gum was invented in 1928, it became popular, not only for its taste, but for the simple fact that you could actually blow a bubble with it formed from your mouth. Today, bubble gum comes in different colors and flavors, but dentists recommend that you chew sugarless gum to lower your risk of cavities.
10. Which of these small-sized food sources can be parched, boiled or honey-roasted?

Answer: Peanuts

Peanuts are more commonly grown in southern locations of North America and Central and South America. It takes a lot of sun, rain and sandy soil for them to grow well. Usually two to five peanuts may be found in a single pod. It takes three to four months for them to become ripe. Peanuts are also used in peanut butter, candy, cookies, oil and many other sources.
