Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many cats (not counting the big ginger tom) were the Captain and Call going to leave to drown?

Answer: Sixteen

These were Auntie Braxton's cats. When Auntie Braxton had a stroke and broke her hip, the Captain and Call were all set to leave them to drown (Louise would have no part of it), but couldn't. Caroline then got an idea--dope them with paregoric and give them away.
2. Who is the speaker of the line from the Bible, 'Esau have I loved, but Jacob have I hated'?

Answer: Nobody--there's no such line

There's no such line. The correct line can be translated as 'Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated (or loved less)'. The speaker is God. Louise, the elder twin, like Esau, took this to mean that God hated her.
3. What kind of cobbler did they have for Christmas dinner the year Caroline and Call got married?

Answer: Peach cobbler

The entire menu was: a chicken stuffed with oysters, boiled potatoes, corn pudding, canned beans, rolls, and a hot peach cobbler. The Captain was invited to dinner along with Louise and her grandmother.
4. Which, if any, of the following are stock phrases spoken by Louise's grandmother?

Answer: Both of these

5. By what age was Caroline playing Chopin?

Answer: Nine

Caroline was very musical. Louise and Caroline's mother owned a piano, and the island children learned to play. However, by the time Caroline was ten, it was clear her real talent was her voice.
6. After which female Shakespeare character did Louise's father name his boat?

Answer: Portia

The boat's full name was 'Portia Sue'. He named the boat 'Portia' because it was Louise's mother's favorite Shakespearean character, but insisted on the Sue, because her name was Susan.
7. In which large city was the company 'Lyrics Unlimited'?

Answer: New York City

Louise sent song lyrics to 'Lyrics Unlimited' in the hopes of becoming rich. They sent her a mimeographed letter back, with her name spelled wrong.
8. What color was Susan Bradshaw's hat when she came back from Caroline's wedding?

Answer: Pale blue

9. Which student was Miss Hazel's idea of a perfect student?

Answer: Myrna

Apparently Miss Hazel's ideal student was someone who wrote neatly and never smiled.
10. True or false: By the end of the book, Louise was a doctor.

Answer: False

Louise was rejected from med school because she was a woman. She switched schools and took a course in nurse-midwifery. Using the same name as her father, she went to Truitt, a town in the Appalachian Mountains, where she met her future husband.
