Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What season of the year was it when Jill was crying behind the gym?

Answer: autumn

The very first line of the book gives us this information. The season is the same in Narnia, as it is clear that the children travel north in the winter.
2. What were the first words spoken by Aslan?

Answer: 'If you are thirsty, you may drink.'

After Aslan had blown Eustace to Narnia, Jill lay down and cried. Then, feeling desperately thirsty, she looked for water, but the Lion was lying beside the stream and she was afraid of him.
3. Aslan gave Jill four signs to help the children on their task to find the missing Prince. These are all the signs, but which was the third one?

Answer: they will find writing on a stone and must do what it says

Jill was to repeat the signs to herself during the story, and even though they messed up three of them, they still completed their task.
4. Which of the following was not a warning Aslan gave Jill just before he blew her to Narnia?

Answer: to be extra careful of people who seem to be helpful and friendly

Aslan explained how the air was clear on his mountain, but it was thicker down below, and Jill must take care not to be confused because of it.
5. Where did the children spend their first evening in Narnia?

Answer: Cair Paravel

Glimfeather came during the night to take the children to the Parliament of Owls, and from there to Puddleglum's wigwam. They did not spend the night at Harfang until much later.
6. As the Parliament of Owls began, Scrubb (Eustace) spoke up on behalf of someone - who?

Answer: the King

He was very brave about this - speaking up for King Caspian X (the Caspian of his adventures on the 'Dawn Treader'), and saying that he would not remain if the parliament was convened in order to plot against the King. The owls were all King's Men as well.
7. When Prince Rilian went to meet the beautiful lady for the penultimate time, who did he take with him?

Answer: Drinian

The beautiful lady was, in fact, the serpent who had killed his mother, the Queen. The very next time Prince Rilian went out to see her, he vanished.
8. What colour was Puddleglum's hair?

Answer: greeny-grey

Each hair was flat rather than round, like ours, so the overall effect was as if his hair was made up of tiny reeds. Added to this was a very muddy complexion.
9. What did the other Marsh-wiggles say about Puddleglum?

Answer: that he didn't take life seriously

The other Marsh-wiggles also said that Puddleglum was too full of bobance and bounce and high spirits!
10. Why did the children not sleep well on their second night in the wigwam?

Answer: Puddleglum snored

Jill dreamt of road-drills, and waterfalls and being in express trains in tunnels, the sound was so bad.
11. At what time did Puddleglum, Scrubb and Jill cross the River Shribble the next day?

Answer: 9 o'clock

After this, the three climbed up a cliff, so as to avoid the gorge, which would have been used by giants as a road.
12. Many days later they came to a giant bridge, which spanned cliff to cliff over the gorge. Its height above the cliffs was likened to the height of - what?

Answer: the height of the dome of St Paul's

. . . so the middle of the bridge would be the height of St Paul's dome PLUS the depth of the gorge itself. Quite a distance to fall.
13. According to the Lady of the Green Kirtle, when do the giants of Harfang close their gates?

Answer: a few hours after noon

The Lady of the Green Kirtle met them after they crossed over the bridge, and although her companion (a dark knight) said nothing, she was very kind and told them of the welcome which would await them at Harfang.
14. When Jill fell into a trench, they found that it was cut square and neat, although it led nowhere. Later they were to realise that she had fallen into a letter carved in stone - but which letter was it?

Answer: E

It was a shame the Lady of the Green Kirtle had encouraged them with stories of Harfang, as the trench would been a good place to camp down, and the next day they would have seen that it was the third sign.
15. Puddleglum had a little too much to drink when they were with the Porter, and consequently was unable to speak clearly. Which of the following did he not say when he was trying to say he was a respectable Marsh-wiggle?

Answer: reshpeckawiggle

Horrible question - sorry! I just couldn't resist a question about these wonderful words!
16. What did Aslan show Jill in the middle of the night?

Answer: the carving in the rock

The next morning, when they all looked out of the window, she remembered seeing Aslan in the night, and they discussed ways of going to the ruined city and following the signs again.
17. How many giants carried the litter the Queen lay on to go hunting?

Answer: 6

The King, like the other giants, went on foot. The children supposed that ordinary horses would be far too small for them to ride.
18. After escaping Harfang, they went underground, and then slid some distance into the earth. According to Puddleglum, how far down did they fall?

Answer: a mile

He guessed at this distance because they were no longer cold, and they slid for some time.
19. The Earthmen they met underground were all different, but what thing did they all have in common?

Answer: they were all pale

Each one carried a three-pronged spear, and each one looked miserable. Other than the paleness of skin, there was no other physical feature which was common to each.
20. Jill was scared of the small passageway they were made to go down; in which order did Scrubb suggest they travelled to help her over her fear?

Answer: Puddleglum, Jill, Scrubb

That way Jill could hold onto Puddleglum's heels, and her heels could be held by Scrubb, and give her reassurance that she was not alone. Later Puddleglum would be disturbed by the closed-in feeling of being underground.
21. When the Prince was released from his enchantment, he was surprised to find how long he had been in the power of the witch. How long had he been missing?

Answer: ten years

He also learnt that his father, the King, was old and infirm and had travelled east in order to seek Aslan for advice about his successor.
22. How did Puddleglum break the spell the witch was spinning about the children, the Prince and himself?

Answer: he burnt his foot

This put the fire out, thus destroying the magic smoke which was coming from it. It also filled the room with the smell of burnt Marsh-wiggle, which was not nice! As a bonus, the pain cleared Puddleglum's brain and he was able to answer all her explanations of the supposed imaginative 'overworld'.
23. What was the name of the Really Deep Land?

Answer: Bism

The witch had used magic to bring the Earthmen up to her kingdom, and was going to force them to form her army to overthrow the Narnians, so she could rule through the Prince. Th Earthman, Golg, told the Prince, Puddleglum, Scrubb and Jill this after they had killed the witch.
24. Why was Jill unable to speak when she was checking out the hole at the end of the tunnel?

Answer: she got a snowball in the mouth

They had come up in Narnia, and it was the night of the Great Snow Dance, which is performed on the first moonlit night when there is snow on the ground. Jill just happened to get in the way of a snowball!
25. Jill accused Puddleglum of being a regular old humbug, saying he was as doleful as a funeral and - what?

Answer: as brave as a lion

The children were taken to Cair Paravel the next day (Prince Rillian went immediately as his father was returning), and left Puddleglum behind, but only after a fond farewell. Back on Aslan's mountain, the young Caspian was revived by Aslan and he helped Scrubb and Jill deal with the bullies at their school.
