Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A fairy tale by the brothers Grimm tells us about a donkey, a dog, a cat and a rooster going to a German city in order to play some music there. To which German city are these animals travelling?

Answer: Bremen

The only German city listed in the options is Bremen. This city lies on the river Weser, about 60 km from its harbour city Bremerhaven.
This fairy tale is called "The Bremen Town Musicians".
On their way to Bremen, the animals defeat a gang of robbers. The cat scratches one of the robbers, the dog bites him, the donkey kicks him and the rooster makes a terrible noise.
The brothers Jacob (1785-1863) and Wilhelm Grimm (1786-1859) were prolific authors. They wrote grammar books, a dictionary, and a collection of ancient fairy tales. The fairy tales have made the Brothers Grimm famous all over the world.
2. Puss in Boots appears in the animated movie "Shrek 2". This character is originally from another fairy tale, in which this cat serves a miller's son. Which noble title does the cat invent for this miller's son?

Answer: The Marquis of Carabas

The fairy tale "Puss in Boots" was written by Charles Perrault (1628-1703). He adopted the author's name "Mother the Goose". The story "Puss in Boots" tells how a smart cat plots to marry the miller's son to a real princess. In order to achieve this, Puss in Boots starts delivering presents to the king in the name of the cat's master, "the Marquis of Carabas". Carabas is not a real place, but was invented purely for this story.
3. In the medieval fairy tale "Reynard the Fox" there appear many different animals. What is the cat's name?

Answer: Tybert

All these are animals out of the fairy tale named after Reynard the Fox. Bruin is a bear, Baldwin is a donkey and Isegrim is a wolf. Tybert is the cat. Besides these animals, there are also Courtoys the dog, Cuward the hare and Chanticleer the rooster that accuse Reynard of many evil. There are many versions of the fairy tale, written in old French, old German, old Dutch or old English. All of these stories tell about King Noble the lion inviting Reynard to a courthouse to face the accusation of having killed Chanticleer's kid. Reynard tricks Bruin and Tybert when they come to fetch him.

When he finally is confronted with the court, he tells about a hidden treasure and gets away once again.
4. Which of these fairy tales by Hans Christian Andersen tells us about a bird finding shelter in a house with a cat?

Answer: The Ugly Duckling

Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875) was a Danish author who left us several well-known fairy tales. All the options are titles of his fairy tales.
The ugly duckling hatched from an egg near some ducks. The adult ducks tease the duckling, which runs away and finds shelter with an old lady. There the cat teases it again, saying "Can you purr?" After the winter, the duckling runs away again and finds its luck with a flock of swans, because it was in fact a little swan and not a duckling.
5. Do the "Fables of La Fontaine" contain any stories about a cat?

Answer: Yes

Jean de la Fontaine (1621-1695) wrote about 240 short fables, mostly on animals. Notorious fables of his include "The Tortoise and the Hare" and "The Hen with the Golden Eggs".
One of the fables involving a cat is "The Cat Metamorphosed into a Woman". It tells about a single man falling in love with his cat. Magically the cat turns into a beautiful bride, and the couple marry. But when mice disturb the silence, the bride turns back into a cat to hunt the mice down. And this time the cat will not return as a woman.
6. In the comic cartoon series "The Smurfs" there is also a cat. What is its name?

Answer: Azrael

Gargamel and Azrael both appear in the Smurfs cartoon series. Gargamel is a wizard chasing the Smurfs: he needs one of them for various experiments. Azrael, his pet cat, would surely like to eat some Smurfs. But of course the Smurfs always manage to escape.
It was the Belgian comic cartoon artist Peyo (Pierre Culliford, 1928-1992) who created the Smurfs: a race of dwarves with blue skins.
7. The cat 'Cosmic Creepers' is owned by a witch in the books "The Magic Bedknob" and "Bonfires and Broomsticks", both by Mary Norton. What is the witch's name?

Answer: Miss Price

The main character in "The Magic Bedknob" and in "Bonfires and Broomsticks" is Miss Price. In the movie made out of these two books, Angela Lansbury plays the witch Miss Eglentine Price.
Mary Norton (1903-1992) was a British author.
8. In "The Jungle Book" by Rudyard Kipling, there are two big cats. The tiger is called Shere Khan. What is the name of the panther?

Answer: Bagheera

Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936) was a British author. His collection of stories "The Jungle Book" was made into an animated movie by the Walt Disney studios.
Akela is one of the wolves. This wolf has educated Mowgli, the boy lost in the jungle.
Hathi is the leader of the elephants.
Baloo is a bear. In the book he teaches the law of the jungle, while in the movie he has become a fun loving character.
The panther is called Bagheera. He takes Mowgli to the village of man.
9. What is the big cat's name in the book and cartoon series "Winnie the Pooh"?

Answer: Tigger

All of these options are animals featuring in the "Winnie the Pooh" series. Kanga is a kangaroo, piglet is a baby pig (naturally) and Eeyore is a donkey. Tigger is the big cat: a tiger-like creature. He prefers bouncing over normal walking. Tigger becomes best friends with Eeyore, Piglet and Kanga's son Roo.
The original stories of Winnie the Pooh were written by A.A. Milne (1882-1956), an English author.
10. Which book series started with the publication of the story "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe"?

Answer: The Chronicles of Narnia

"The Chronicles of Narnia" is a series of seven books written by C.S. Lewis. The first published book (and the first to be made into a movie) was "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe". In this book and movie, four children enter a different world via a magical wardrobe.

In this other world the animals are talking and the good lion Aslan fights the evil White Witch called Jadis. Andrew Adamson has taken upon him to direct seven movies, one per book.
