Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which animal is named in the following song? "The itsy bitsy _____ climbed up the water spout ..."

Answer: Spider

"...Down came the rain
And washed the spider out
Out came the sun
And dried up all the rain
And the itsy-bitsy spider
Climbed up the spout again."

Called "The Spider Song", or sometimes "Itsy Bitsy Spider", this song, as well as an alternate version, was found in the book "Camp and Camino in Lower California" in 1910.
2. Which animal is named in the following song? "How much is that ____ in the window?"

Answer: Doggie

"...The one with the waggly tail
How much is that doggie in the window?
I do hope that doggie's for sale."

Written by Bob Merrill in 1952, "The Doggie in the Window" was recorded by Patti Page and released the following year.
3. Which animal is named in the following song? "So she sailed away on a sunny summer day on the back of a ____ ..."

Answer: Crocodile

'..."You see," said she,
"He's as tame as he can be,
I'll ride him down the Nile."

Well, the croc winked his eye
As she waved them all goodbye,
Wearing a happy smile.

At the end of the ride,
The lady was inside,
And the smile
Was on the crocodile!'

The hand movements that accompany this song have made it a favorite at summer camp for years!
4. Which animal is named in the following song? "Baby ____ in the deep blue sea ..."

Answer: Beluga

"...Swim so wild and swim so free
The heaven above and the sea below
See the little white whale on the go."

Raffi released "Baby Beluga", a children's album, in 1980. Children who grow up listing to Raffi's songs are called "Beluga Grads"!
5. Which animal is missing from the following song? "Oh give me a home, where the buffalo roam, where the ____ and the antelope play ..."

Answer: Deer

"...Where seldom is heard a discouraging word
And the skies are not cloudy all day.

Home, home on the range
Where the deer and the antelope play;
Where seldom is heard a discouraging word
And the skies are not cloudy all day."

Dr. Brewster M. Higley wrote the original poem, "My Western Home" in the 1870s. Several versions of "Home on the Range" were subsequently written; the version above was written in 1910 by John A. Lomax.
6. Which animal is named in the following song? "The old gray ____ just ain't what she used to be ..."

Answer: Mare

"...Ain't what she used to be, ain't what she used to be,
The old gray mare, she ain't what she used to be,
Many long years ago."

Stephen Foster is sometimes listed as the composer of this folk song, however, it is uncertain who wrote it.
7. What animal is named in the following song? "Little ____ Foo Foo, went hopping through the forest, scooping up the field mice and bopping them on the head ..."

Answer: Bunny

'...Down came the Good Fairy, and she said
"Little bunny Foo Foo
I don't want to see you
Scooping up the field mice
And bopping them on the head."'

A traditional folk song with many different versions, "Little Bunny Foo Foo" is sometimes called "Little Rabbit Foo Foo". The interactive nature of this song makes it very popular among children.
8. What animal is named in the following song? "Old MacDonald had a farm. E-I-E-I-O! And on that farm he had a ____. E-I-E-I-O ! With a moo moo here...."

Answer: Cow

"...And a moo, moo there,
Here a moo, there a moo,
Everywhere a moo, moo,

Old MacDonald had a farm,
E-I-E-I-O."

Apparently in the original version of the song, released in the 1917 book "Tommy's Tunes", the farmer had a different name! It was called "Old Macdougal Had a Farm", and instead of "E-I-E-I-O", the lyric was "Ohio"!
9. What animal is named in the following song? "The ____ went over the mountain, the ____ went over the mountain, the ____ went over the mountain to see what he could see"

Answer: Bear

"...The bear went over the mountain,
And all that he could see,
And all that he could see,
Was the other side of the mountain,
The other side of the mountain,
The other side of the mountain,
Was all that he could see."

"The Bear Went Over the Mountain" is usually sung to the tune of "For He's a Jolly Good Fellow".
10. What animal is named in the following song? "All around the mulberry bush the monkey chased the ____. The monkey stopped to pull up his sock. Pop! goes the ____."

Answer: Weasel

An alternate line for "The monkey stopped to pull up his sock" is "The monkey stopped to scratch his nose".

There are many different lyrics to "Pop! Goes the Weasel", which was first published in 1853. The rhyme is also popular as a children's game.
