Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Lanie and her family live in the suburbs of which city?

Answer: Boston, Massachusetts

The Holland family lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts, a suburb of Boston. Their house is three stories high with little decks and big windows. Lanie's mom, being an architect, redesigned the inside of the house along with convenience devices due to the height.
2. Where in the world is Lanie's best friend?

Answer: Indonesia

Dakota, Lanie's best friend, has gone to Indonesia with her parents for six months. Her father is studying the rainforest, the home of orangutans. Dakota and Lanie communicate via email.
3. What type of scientist is Aunt Hannah?

Answer: Ornithologist

An ornithologist is a scientist who studies birds. Aunt Hannah listens to birdcalls, studying and analyzing them. She teaches Lanie a few birdcalls, including the Carolina Wren, the black-capped chickadee, and the common yellowthroat.
4. Which one is the birdcall of a Carolina wren?

Answer: tea kettle, tea kettle!

The Carolina wren's birdcall sounds like "tea kettle". "Hey sweetie" is what the black-capped chickadee's birdcall sounds like. "Wichity" is the birdcall of the common yellowthroat, and "queer" is a robin's and/or scarlet tanger's.
5. Which of these do Lanie and Aunt Hannah NOT plant in the backyard?

Answer: Fruits

Lanie and Aunt Hannah transform the plain backyard to a backyard full of wonder. They plant wildflowers and milkweed to attract butterflies--particularly monarchs--and other wildlife.
6. Who is Lanie's next-door neighbor?

Answer: Ms. Marshall

Mr. James is Lanie's fourth grade teacher. Ms. Marshall is Lanie's new next-door neighbor. She and Lanie did not start off on good terms. Ms. Marshall owns a cat named Caesar (whom Lulu, Lanie's pet rabbit, nearly attacks). The wildflower garden Lanie and Aunt Hannah planted seemed to upset her.

She thought it was ugly compared to the neatly organized roses she had gardeners plant. Later on, Ms. Marshall began to tolerate the Holland's backyard and actually began liking it.
7. Why did Lanie get mad at Emily?

Answer: Because Emily "ruined" Lanie's science journal.

Aunt Hannah had to go to Costa Rica at last-minute to fill in for another person. Lanie was upset because her aunt and best friend were having real adventures, and she was stuck home in Boston. Later, Emily shows Mrs. Holland and Lanie how she "helped" Lanie with her field notes, and that was the last straw for Lanie.
8. A blue whale's tongue can weigh as much as an elephant.

Answer: True

At the community gardens, Lanie meets Nicholas when he states the fact. They become friends and tell each other nature facts.
9. How many miles do monarch butterflies migrate each year?

Answer: 2,000

Monarch butterflies migrate 2,000 miles from the U.S. and Canada to Mexico--and back. In Mexico, hundreds of them rest on trees. When spring/summer comes, the monarchs migrate back and lay the eggs of their young on milkweed. They do not eat the milkweed--the caterpillars do. Now that naturally-growing milkweed is almost rare, people now grow milkweed for monarch butterflies.
10. How does Lanie spread awareness?

Answer: Organizing a garden festival.

Lanie wanted to raise awareness of the orangutans, monarch butterflies, and taking care of nature. At first, it seemed impossible. But with some help from Dakota, Lanie finds her voice and speaks up.
