Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "'Dowager', Klaus whispered to Violet, 'is a fancy word for _______."

Answer: widow

Aunt Josephine is a dowager. From WordWeb: "A widow holding property received from her deceased husband".

Dowager can also be used for aristocratic or royal elderly women. For example, Catherine of Aragon was referred to as the "Princess Dowager of Wales" or "Dowager Princess of Wales" after her marriage to Henry the VIII of England was annulled.
2. "The three Baudelaire youngsters looked at one another surreptitiously, a word which here means _______."

Answer: while Aunt Josephine wasn't looking

The word surreptitiously comes from the Latin word surripere, which means 'to take away secretly'. Some synonyms for the word are furtive, sneaky, sly, and secretive.
3. "'I will thank you not to be impertinent,' Aunt Josephine said, using a word which here means _______."

Answer: pointing out that I'm wrong, which annoys me

Aunt Josephine says to the orphans, "I can't believe you would dare to disagree with a man who has eye problems." Then Klaus says, "I have eye problems, and you're disagreeing with me." This is when she says the quote above.

Some synonyms for impertinent are audacious, saucy, cheeky, insolent, brazen, and fresh. Another meaning for impertinent can be irrelevant, but that is not the definition used in the quote.
4. "But Klaus took no notice of this. He opened all of the books and took copious - the word 'copious' here means _______ - notes, stopping every so often to draw a circle around some part of what Aunt Josephine had written."

Answer: lots of

This word comes from the Latin word copia, which means abundance. Some other synonyms for copious are plentiful, bountiful, ample, generous, substantial, and voluminous.
5. Watch out, this one has two answers: "Violet was kicking the creature from behind, and Sunny was biting its wrist, but the person was so Brobdingnagian - a word which here means _______ - that the children were causing it minimal pain, a phrase which here means _______."

Answer: unbelievably husky; no pain at all

This word comes from the land of Brobdingnag, a country in "Gulliver's Travels" by Jonathan Swift, where everyone was enormous. An antonym derived from the same book is Lilliputian, a type of tiny people who lived in the country of Lilliput.

In the book, this happened when the Baudelaires were trying to get to Curdled Cave to save Aunt Josephine. They needed one of Captain Sham's (a.k.a. Count Olaf) sailboats to get across, but his associate who looked like neither a man nor a woman was stopping them. He or she is enormous, and doesn't seem to be able to speak.
6. "So at this point in the story, in order to mollify the publishers - the word 'mollify' here means _______ - please allow me to give you a piece of advice, even though I don't know anything about you."

Answer: get them to stop tearing their hair out in worry

Some synonyms for mollify are soothe, calm, pacify, and placate. It comes from the Latin word mollis, which means soft.

Here is Mr. Snicket's advice: If you ever need to get to Curdled Cave in a hurry, do not, under any circumstances, steal a boat and attempt to sail across Lake Lachrymose during a hurricane, because it is very dangerous and the chances of your survival are practically zero. You should especially not do this if, like the Baudelaire orphans, you have only a vague idea of how to work a sailboat.
7. "In front of the cave there was a sign saying it was for sale, and the orphans could not imagine who would want to buy such a phantasmagorical - the word 'phantasmagorical' here means _______ - place.

Answer: all the creepy, scary words you can think of put together

The one-word synonym I came across the most as I was looking through my sources was surreal. In this case, I'm assuming it was so scary and creepy, that it was hard to imagine it was real. Other synonyms are dream-like, illusive, and delusional.
8. "With a loud THWACK! the leeches all hit the boat more or less at once, and the sailboat rocked precariously, a word which here means _______."

Answer: in a way which almost threw Aunt Josephine and the Baudelaire youngsters to their doom

This word comes from the Latin word precārius which means 'obtained by entreaty' or 'uncertain'. Some synonyms are rickety, unstable, unsteady, wobbly, tottery, insecure, and shaky.
9. "Burning ants, of course, is an abhorrent hobby - the word 'abhorrent' here means _______ - but remembering the story made Violet see that she could use the lens of the spying glass to focus the light of the moon and make a fire."

Answer: what Count Olaf used to do when he was about your age

Abhorrent has a wide array of synonyms. Here are some: loathsome, detestable, horrid, repulsive, obscene, vile, nefarious, despicable, abominable, and wretched.

The Baudelaires' father had a cousin who used to find burning ants with her magnifying glass entertaining. Violet remembered the story and used it to signal for help when her siblings and Aunt Josephine were stuck on Lake Lachrymose with the leeches.
10. "Klaus looked assuaged, which is a fancy word for _______ that he had learned by reading a magazine article."

Answer: relieved

The word assuage comes from the Latin word suavis, which means sweet, or delightful. It can also be used to mean satisfied, as in hunger or thirst, or pacified. Some other synonyms are alleviated, mollified, dulcified, comforted, and eased.

This happened when Sunny bit Count Olaf's fake peg leg, and Mr. Poe finally believed that Captain Sham was really Count Olaf.

All of the word origins and synonyms are from www.answers.com.
