Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. With what do games of American football, soccer and rugby all start?

Answer: Kick off

In soccer, you pass to a team mate. In American football and rugby you kick the ball towards your opponents and run like mad.
2. Which 'Down Under' sport starts with a centre bounce, where the umpire bounces the ball on the ground for two players to leap for?

Answer: Australian Rules football

The two players who leap for the ball are called ruckmen. It's quite a skill to bounce the oddly-shaped ball straight up in the air. It puts off a lot of people from becoming Aussie Rules umpires!
3. Which sport starts with a tip off or jump ball?

Answer: Basketball

The referee throws the ball up for two opponents to try to tip the ball to a team mate. They aren't allowed to catch it.
4. With what does an ice hockey match begin?

Answer: Face off

The official drops the puck between two opponents, who try to hit it back to a team mate. It used to be called a puck-off.
5. When white makes the first move in a game of chess, which piece could be moved instead of a pawn?

Answer: Knight

Either knight could make an L-shaped move jumping over the line of pawns. Most people would move a pawn first.
6. At the start of a game of cricket, the captains have a coin toss to decide what?

Answer: Who bats first

Winning the toss can be very important in cricket. If it's overcast and humid, batting can be very difficult. On the other hand, if the wicket is expected to break up, batting first can be a big advantage.
7. For the first serve in a game of tennis, where does the server stand behind the baseline?

Answer: Right of the centre line

A game in tennis is part of a set. You win two or three sets to win a match. Some people think starting on the right favours left-handed players. Try telling that to Roger Federer.
8. In an Olympic 100 metre race, does the starter shout "Ready, steady, go"?

Answer: No

The athletes get into their blocks and the starter shouts "On your marks" and "Set" before firing a starting pistol. The blocks have sensors to tell if anyone has made a false start.
9. In a game of darts, the players settle the order of play by throwing a dart each to see who can get nearest to what?

Answer: The bullseye

They call it 'nearest the bull'. The bullseye is right in the middle of the board. During a match it scores 50, which is not the highest you can score. Trebles of twenty, nineteen, eighteen and seventeen all score more.
10. In Major League Baseball, how do they decide which team bats first?

Answer: It's always the visiting team

The visiting team always bats first. It is seen as a courtesy to guests. Does it give an advantage? Some say it favours the home team to bat second.
