Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What are the March sisters doing when we first meet them in 'Little Women'?

Answer: Knitting

The four girls, Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy were knitting socks for the soldiers fighting in the American Civil War. Their father was away from home as he was a military chaplain. Their mother, whom they called Marmee, was helping to pack boxes of comforts for the soldiers at Christmas.
2. What was the name of the German family whom the Marches had befriended?

Answer: Hummel

The Hummel family were poor German immigrants living in one room with a sick mother,a family of small children and a baby.

They had no food and the Marches gave up their breakfast and carried the food and some fuel to the family on Christmas morning.
3. What book did Marmee place beneath the girls' pillows as a Christmas gift?

Answer: No name is given, but it is an inspirational work of some sort

The reference to the book as "a true guidebook for any pilgrim going on a long journey" suggests it may have been "The Pilgrim's Progress", although some readers consider that it may have been a Bible (or a New Testament), due to the reference to it as being "that beautiful old story of the best life ever lived." When the children were younger, they used to play a game based on "The Pilgrim's Progress" where they had bags on their backs to represent burdens and travelled through the house experiencing good times and bad until they reached the top of the house which they called The Celestial City.

All of the sisters were thrilled with their gifts and planned to read them every day and use them as a guide for their lives.
4. The girls had a friend they called Laurie. What was his real first name?

Answer: Theodore

Laurie lived next door with his grandfather, Mr Laurence, and his tutor, John Brooke.

He did not like his name because some boys called him Dora so he chose to be called Laurie instead. Jo sometimes called him Teddy.
5. When Meg went to stay with her friends the Moffats she had a dress made of tarlatan. What sort of fabric is this?

Answer: Cotton

Tarlatan is a thin stiffened cotton muslin fabric with an open weave. It was used to make inexpensive evening dresses.

Meg wished that she had silk dresses like her wealthier friends.
6. What gift did Mr Laurence give to Beth?

Answer: A piano

Beth was very musical and Mr Laurence allowed her to play his grand piano. To thank him she made him a pair of embroidered slippers.

A few days later he gave her the cabinet piano which had belonged to his little grand-daughter who had died young.

A cabinet piano is a small upright piano and in Victorian times was ornately decorated.
7. What was the name of the newspaper produced by the March girls?

Answer: Pickwick Portfolio

Each of the girls contributed to the paper, writing under pseudonyms of characters from "The Pickwick Papers" by Charles Dickens. Meg was Samuel Pickwick, Jo was Augustus Snodgrass, Beth was Tracy Tupman and Amy was Nathaniel Winkle. They wrote stories, articles, poems and hints.
8. What article belonging to Meg did John Brooke keep?

Answer: A glove

Meg left a pair of gloves at the Laurences' house but only one was returned to her. Laurie told her that John Brooke had it and had confessed that he loved Meg but could not do anything about it as she was so young and he was very poor.

Later they became engaged and were married.
9. What delicacy was Amy deprived of at school?

Answer: Pickled limes

Many of the girls at school had brought in pickled limes and Mr Davis, the teacher, had forbidden any more to be brought.

Amy borrowed money from Meg and bought limes which she brought into school. She showed them off and eventually one of the girls told Mr Davis.

He made her bring the limes to him and then made her throw them out through the window. Insult was added to injury when she heard shouts of joy from some poor children who were playing underneath the window.
10. What did Jo sell to help raise money to help her father when he was ill?

Answer: Her hair

When they received word that Mr March was ill Marmee immediately started making arrangements to go to him. They had to borrow some money from a relative to pay for the trip and Jo wanted to help so she went into town and sold her beautiful long hair for 25 dollars.
