Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. If you have 3 pencils and someone gives you 2 more pencils, how many pencils do you have all together?

Answer: 5

The words all together tell you to add the numbers together. Another clue is the word more. 3+2=5
2. You have 7 apples and you eat one. How many apples do you have left?

Answer: 6

The words "have left" tell you to subtract. When you subtract you end up with a smaller number than you started with. 7-1=6
3. If I give you 5 pennies and you add the 5 pennies you already have to it, how many pennies do you have?

Answer: 10

This time the word add is right in the story problem so you know you need to add the numbers. If you have 10 pennies you have 10 cents. 5+5-10
4. If you have 6 cookies and I take away 5 of them how many cookies do you now have?

Answer: 1

Take away are clue words that tell us to subtract. Looking for these clue words help to determine if you add or subtract. 6-5=1
5. You have 4 toy cars and I increase the amount by 5. How many do you have now?

Answer: 9

If you increase something you are adding to it. This is another clue word. 4+5=9
6. Let's try some problems with money. If you have $1.00 and lose 25 cents how much money do you have left?

Answer: 75 cents

There are 4 quarters (25 cents) in a dollar, so if you lose 1 quarter or 25 cents you will have 3 quarters or 75 cents left. Lose and have left both tell us to subtract.
7. If you have 10 cents and I give you 15 cents what is the total amount of money you have?

Answer: 25 cents

10 cents equals 1 US dime. 15 cents equals one dime and one US nickel. 25 cents equals 1 US quarter. When you look for the total amount you find it by using addition.
8. Let's try some two digit problems now. If you have 40 cupcakes and your friends eat 29 of them how many do you have left?

Answer: 11

When you subtract 40-29 you have to borrow from the 10s place so you can do the subtraction 10 - 9 and then 3 from 1 to get the answer. Another way to do this problem is to say 40-30 is 10 plus 1 more is 11.
9. You have 35 marbles and you buy 16 more. How many marbles do you have all together?

Answer: 51

When you add 35+16 you have to add 5+6 and carry the 1 to the tens place. You then have to add 3+1+1 to get 5. This will give you an answer of 51.
10. If you have 30 popsicles and share with 20 of your friends how many do you have left?

Answer: 10

This time you do not have to borrow because you can subtract 0 from 0 and get 0. Once you do that you simply subtract the 3-2 i in the tens place to get 1. This gives you the answer of 10.
