Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. For which of the following dragons that appeared in the Triwizard Tournament was it said that "its back end is as dangerous as its front"?

Answer: Hungarian Horntail

The Hungarian Horntail is a highly vicious dragon breed and is widely considered the most dangerous one of all. The Horntail is found in Hungary, hence its name. Its scales are black and there are bronze-colored spikes protruding from its tail. It can also breath fire that reaches almost 50 feet away.

The description ("its back end is as dangerous as its front") was a comment Charlie Weasley made to Hagrid in "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire", when the latter had sneaked to the forest with Madame Maxime and Harry.
2. The Acromantula is one of the most dangerous magical species to appear in the books. Which of the following statements about them is NOT true?

Answer: They cannot see.

Arguably Ron's least favorite creature, an Acromantula is a giant spider covered in black hair. Acromantulas also have eight black eyes, which become white if they are blind (as Harry noticed when he and Ron met Aragog and the other Acromantulas in "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets"). Acromantula venom is extremely toxic and is sold at very high prices.

The Acromantula colony in the Forbidden Forest was started by Hagrid, who found Aragog while he was still an egg.
3. What is similar about Lethifolds and Dementors? (Hint: Think what is known about Dementors.)

Answer: The only known way to repel them is a Patronus.

Dementors are creatures with human-like form that wear a dark cloak, giving them a wraith-like appearance. They affect the feelings of people around them by literally sucking the happiness out of them. Their most terrible attack, though, is the Dementor's Kiss, which, as Lupin explained to Harry during their private lessons in "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban", steals the soul of a person and leaves behind their body, alive but empty.

A Lethifold looks like a "black cloak half an inch thick". It attacks unsuspecting humans when they are asleep and suffocates them before digesting them. As with Dementors, the only spell that can offer some protection against Lethifolds is the Patronus charm. However, Lethifolds are only found in areas with tropical climate, while Dementors prefer dark and cold regions (as described by Lupin to Harry after Gryffindor's defeat to Hufflepuff in the "Prisoner of Azkaban").
4. Out of all the dragons that appeared in the Triwizard Tournament in "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire", which is the only one that is native to an Asian country?

Answer: Chinese Fireball

The Chinese Fireball is a relatively small dragon, its average length being 25 feet. It has scarlet scales and a number of golden spikes, and it is faster and cleverer than most dragons. The Fireball preys mostly on pigs and humans. During the first task in "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire", the Chinese Fireball was drawn by Viktor Krum.

The other dragons were a Hungarian Horntail, a Swedish Short-Snout and a Common Welsh Green, all native to European countries.
5. What color are the eggs of the Norwegian Ridgeback?

Answer: Black

The Norwegian Ridgeback is similar to the Hungarian Horntail in appearance, though it has ridges on its back while the Horntail has spikes on its tail. As with the Peruvian Vipertooth, the Ridgeback's fangs are poisonous. Its eggs are black, as seen with Norbert(a)'s egg in "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone". Baby Ridgebacks learn to breath out fire earlier than other dragons, when they are one to three months old.
6. What is the color of the Swedish Short-Snout's scales?

Answer: Blue-Grey

Another Scandinavian dragon, the Swedish Short-Snout is regarded as one of the most beautiful dragons (along with the Antipodean Opaleye). Its scales are silvery-blue (or blue-grey, as Harry describes them when the champions pick dragons in the "Goblet of Fire") and its flames are also blue and very powerful, since they can "reduce timber and bone to ash in a matter of seconds".
7. As its name implies, what is unusual about the Quintaped?

Answer: It has five legs.

The name of the Quintaped literally means 'something with five legs', as it comes from the common prefix 'quint', which is used to signify the number five, and 'ped', which is used about legs. Quintapeds are carnivorous creatures covered in red-brown hair, and resemble giant hairy spiders with only five legs. Luckily for Ron though, Quintapeds are only found in the Isle of Drear, north of Scotland.

They are especially hostile towards humans, which earned them the five-X classification. The skeleton of a Quintaped is mentioned in "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince", when Harry looks for a place to hide the Prince's Potions book in the Room of Requirement.
8. A werewolf is indistinguishable from a regular wolf.

Answer: False

There are several ways a werewolf can be distinguished from a regular wolf, as Hermione states when she responds to Snape in "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban". Three of these are the tufted tail, the snout shape and the pupils of the eyes (all three revealed by Wormtail in Snape's memory during "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix"). Werewolves are, of course, only classified as five-X when they are transformed, but there is generally a lot of prejudice against them, as evidenced by the behavior of many people towards Remus Lupin.
9. The Basilisk is a ferocious creature that appears in "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets". What is its nickname?

Answer: King of Serpents

The Basilisk is a highly deadly serpent that is sometimes used by Dark Wizards. When it reaches adulthood, its length can reach 50 feet. The Basilisk's gaze must be avoided, as anyone who looks directly into the serpent's eyes dies. The Basilisk's venom is almost as dangerous, as it is so toxic that it can even destroy Horcruxes.

The only known antidote is phoenix tears. Basilisks generally don't obey humans, even Parselmouths, however Salazar Slytherin and later Voldemort were able to command the Basilisk in the Chamber of Secrets.

Its nickname, King of Serpents, is mentioned in the piece of paper Hermione tore from a library book during "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets".
10. Which of the following magical creatures does NOT have a five-X classification? (Hint: It would ask you this question as a riddle.)

Answer: Sphinx

Sphinxes, native to Egypt, have a four-X classification. They have a human head and a lion's body and they love riddles and puzzles (as Harry found out when he met one during the third task in the "Goblet of Fire"). Manticores and Chimaeras, both native to Greece, are somewhat similar to Sphinxes in appearance.

A Manticore has a human head, a lion's body and a scorpion's tail with a deadly sting, while a Chimaera has a lion's head, a goat's body and a dragon's tail. Nundus are giant leopards with a toxic breath, indigenous to East Africa, and they are considered the most dangerous creatures in the world.
