Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Book 1 - "Philosopher's Stone": Which Famous Witches and Wizards cards did Ron's collection lack?

Answer: Ptolemy and Agrippa

Ptolemy and Agrippa are actually real people.

Ptolemy could be one of two people: The scientist Claudius Ptolemaeus, known for the Almagest, which discussed the motions of stars and planets. Or he could be Ptolemy I Soter, a general who ruled under Alexander the Great and later founded the Ptolemaic Kingdom and the Ptolemaic Dynasty in Egypt.

Agrippa (full name Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa) was a Roman statesman and general and a close friend to Emperor Gaius Julius Caesar Augustus.

Since Agrippa was named after a Roman statesman, JKR probably intended Ptolemy to be the Roman general.
2. Book 2 - "Chamber of Secrets": What was the name of Aragog's wife?

Answer: Mosag

Aragog's name can be broken down into "Ara", which comes from arachnid (the Class which spiders belong to), and "Gog" who was a giant in Welsh mythology. Alternatively, the Greek work "agog" means leader.

According to JKR, "Mosag" is a Gaelic word which means "dirty female" or "filthy". (Source: Accio quotes, "The Magic Behind Harry Potter", October 3, 2002 interview)
3. Book 3 - "Prisoner of Azkaban": What is the acceleration of the Firebolt?

Answer: 150 mi/hr in 10s

For comparison, tornadoes generally have wind speeds less than 110 miles per hour. The Firebolt can go faster than that in ten seconds. Think about it. ;)

On the other hand, the current fastest car in the world (according to The Fastest Car website), the Bugatti Veyron has a greater acceleration at 125mph in 7.3 seconds. (Converted, the Firebolt's acceleration is 6.71 meters/sec/sec while the Bugatti Veyron's is 7.65 meters/sec/sec).

The Firebolt was released in 1993 (Harry's third year), so quite obviously, the Wizarding World has better models now. :)
4. Book 4 - "Goblet of Fire": Who among the following is NOT a chaser for Ireland in the Quidditch World Cup?

Answer: Quigley

This should be an easy one since the commentator for the WC Finals kept shouting out their names.

In her official site, JK Rowling said that all the players in the Irish Quidditch team were named after people she knew. Troy, Moran, and Quigley were good friends of hers.
5. Book 5 - "Order of the Phoenix": Which of the following is NOT a name (first name or last name) of the Beaters who replaced Fred and George in Harry's fifth year?

Answer: Peakes

Andrew Kirke and Jack Sloper were the Beaters who replaced Fred and George in Harry's fifth year. Jimmy Peakes, along with Ritchie Coote, played Beaters when Harry captained Gryffindor in his sixth year.
6. Book 6 - "Half-Blood Prince": Apart from Ginny Weasley and Katie Bell, who else played Chaser for the Gryffindor Quidditch team during Harry's sixth year?

Answer: Robins

Demelza Robins was the third Chaser of the Gryffindor Quidditch team when Harry captained the team in his sixth year. JK Rowling took the name "Demelza" from a charity that Daniel Radcliffe (the actor playing Harry) is supporting.
7. Book 7 - "Deathly Hallows": What was the spell that Flitwick used to protect Hogwarts? He cast this just after Snape had escaped to Voldemort.

Answer: Protego horribilis

"Protego totalum", "Repello muggletum", and "Salvio Hexia" were used by Hermione during the trio's quest to find the Horcruxes.
8. Fill in the blanks: Enter _________ but take heed / of what ________ the sin of greed. / If you seek _________ our floors / a treasure that was never yours, / ________ you have been warned, beware / of finding more than treasure there.

Answer: stranger, awaits, beneath, thief

This is part of the verse that is found at the entrance to Gringotts. It is, quite obviously, a warning to those who want to steal the bank's treasures.
9. Fill in the blanks: Come _______ us where our voices sound, / we cannot _______ above the ground. / And while you're searching ________ this: / we've taken what you'll __________ miss.

Answer: seek, sing, ponder, sorely

This song by the Merpeople is the clue to the Second Task of the Triwizard Tournament. The second half of the song goes:

"An hour long you'll have to look / and to recover what we took. / But past an hour the prospect's black: / too late it's gone, it won't come back."

When Harry was already in the lake and looking for Ron, he heard this verse of the song:

"An hour long you'll have to look / and to recover what we took. Your time's half gone, so tarry not, /Lest what you seek stays here to rot.
10. "Understanding is the first step to acceptance and only with acceptance can there be recovery." When did Dumbledore say this?

Answer: Book 4 ("Goblet of Fire"), after Cedric's death

Cedric Diggory was killed by Peter Pettigrew in the graveyard where Tom Riddle Sr. was buried. Pettigrew used the Avada Kedavra curse. Cedric's death was perhaps one of the most shocking in the whole HP series.
