Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. If you've read the Harry Potter books or watched the movies, you know that Harry's owl is called Hedwig. But what is the name of his friend Ron Weasley's owl?

Answer: Pigwidgeon

This tiny owl first appears at the end of "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban". He is given as a gift to Ron Weasley because of the loss of Scabbers, his rat.
2. Which night bird cures an Emperor who is deathly ill in a tale by Hans Christian Andersen?

Answer: A nightingale

In "The Nightingale", an emperor finds the nightingale in the forest and brings it home to his garden, but then replaces the real bird with an artificial one. The artificial one breaks and the emperor becomes very ill. The real nightingale returns and cures him with its song, but swears the emperor to secrecy.
3. In the Pumpkin Falls mysteries by Heather Vogel Frederick, the protagonist, Truly Lovejoy, is trying to discover which one of these night birds for her life list?

In the second book, "Yours Truly", Truly does see a barred owl, but because her best friend sees it first, she doesn't count it. So at the end of that book, she is still hoping to find one without help.
4. Beatrix Potter has an owl in her story "The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin". What is the name of the owl?

Answer: Old Brown

Squirrel Nutkin is very proud of his tail and while the other squirrels treat Old Brown with respect, he teases Old Brown. Old Brown loses his temper and catches Squirrel Nutkin. Squirrel Nutkin only escapes by losing his tail. After that, he isn't so proud and doesn't tease the owl anymore.

Answer: Whippoorwill

The neighbors are called Whippoorwills because they fill their yard with trash and are rather mean. Despite that, the heroine, Claire, tries to help their dog, which is chained in the yard. She sees that the dog is not just a piece of trash. This book is more about a dog than about birds.

Answer: An owl

One He-owl is chosen to be a member of the council by Aslan. Later, the talking owls form a "parliament" (a group of owls is called a parliament of owls) because they are unable to meet during the day when other animals can meet.
