Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I'm a little dog but I'm ferocious and courageous. I'm a real terrier. I'm white and black and have a rough coat. Others can be white/black/tan and have smooth coats. I was first bred in England by a man named Russell. Can you guess my breed ?

Answer: Jack Russell

Did you guess right? My Uncle Robin tells me that because I've got high energy levels, I'm good at doggy sports. Yep, just give me a ball or a hurdle to jump and I'm happy, happy, happy!

He also said that I can be aggressive and stubborn and Jack Russells should be given good training when young.... Grrr!

Jack Russells were first bred in 1795 by the Reverend John Russell so perhaps when I'm older I'll wear a collar. Hehehe!
2. My human mum and dad say I was suckled by a cat when I was a puppy. Can this be true? Can cats feed little puppies?

Answer: Yes

Well knock me down and pick me up again! I didn't believe it! But yes, I was abandoned by my doggy mum and the house cat suckled me. Not a very common thing to happen unless the animals are owned by the same humans.
However, recently there was a chihuahua that nursed four baby squirrels and many other examples of dogs feeding cats and vice versa.
3. Is it possible to keep dogs and cats in the same house?

Answer: yes

It's true. I have five cats living with me. Four ginger cats and one black and white cat. We have a few spats, but as the cats usually win, we dogs keep our distance and allow them to think they are in charge. They are named Sharp one, Sharper one, Very sharp one, Ouch and Sharpest. No, just kidding, but they do have nasty sharp things at the end of their paws.
They are really called Misty, Emmie, Oliver, Annie and Muffin.
4. Sometimes I get the urge to rub my bottom across the floor, I lose my appetite and cough. My human mum knows what to do and gets a pill to get rid of what?

Answer: Worms

Lobsters on my ears? I don't fancy that!

All dog owners should regularly worm their dogs to keep us healthy.

The two most common types of intestinal worms are roundworms and tapeworms Puppies are most at risk from ringworms and should be wormed from 2 weeks old every 2 weeks until 12 weeks old. Roundworms can be passed from the mum before birth and through her milk. Yucky!

Tapeworms are spread through a host which is usually a flea, so don't forget that we dogs need regular de-fleaing as well.
5. Okay, what makes us doggies like to howl?

Answer: All these reasons

Yep, all of these reasons and more. We even howl at the moon!
Usually a dog howling is associated with something sinister. Some humans think we can tell when something bad is about to happen.
Uncle Robin asked me, when we doggies howl at music or join in with a family sing song, if it was because we are having fun or because it hurts our ears.

It does not do to offend the hand that feeds you, so I refused to comment. Hehehe!
6. Are ginger cats always male?

Answer: No

False and I should know! We've got four ginger cats living here. Two male and two female. However, females are less common but by no means rare.
It's all to do with genes and very complicated.
Odd because I thought genes were what some humans where on their legs but uncle Robin says that's jeans. Well a little dog like me can't be expected to know everything! And no, I'm not sulking, I just felt like sitting in a dark corner with my back to everyone - sniff.
7. Another one of my doggy mates here is Jessica. She's a German shepherd originally bred for guarding sheep from wolves. However, at the end of World War I, the breed was renamed. What to?

Answer: Alsatian wolf dog

The U.K. Kennel Club were concerned that anti-German feeling after the war would be bad for the breed, hence the renaming. After a few years the 'wolf dog' part of the name was dropped but it was not until the 1970s that the breed was again allowed to be registered as a German Shepherd. You humans have long memories!
8. When I feel the need to relieve myself I like to lift my leg and wee on trees, lamp-posts etc. Why do I do this?

Answer: To mark my territory

I do like to mark my territory especially when the other dogs are around so I can show my dominance.
Uncle Robin has told me that the dog than can wee the highest is the most dominant. Rubbish! It's not my fault I'm knee high to a grasshopper.... Just off to nip someone's ankle.
9. My doggy friends and me dread getting this disease from a tick bite. What is it commonly called?

Answer: Lyme disease

Lyme disease is a very nasty disease that affects humans as well as dogs.
The ticks, often found in forests and grassland, carry a bacteria known as Borrelia burgdorferi. They multiply in the tick's gut and lie dormant in the tick larvae until springtime. Then they jump on us warm blooded mammals.
Lymph nodes usually swell often causing a limp in a foreleg. High temperatures are common and if not treated quickly, joint damage and damage to the heart and nervous system will become permanent.
10. Recently I lost a long time doggy friend. Her breed originated in Belgium and she was big, weighing over 45 kilos! During both World Wars her breed looked for wounded soldiers. Can you name her breed?

Answer: Bouvier

Lucy passed away on Easter Sunday, 2009, at the grand old age of 14. The expected life span of a bouvier is twelve years.
Originally bred as a herd dog, the bouvier not only looked for wounded soldiers in the war but also acted as couriers, carrying important messages back and forth.

Bouviers come in black, fawn, brindle, salt and pepper and grey colours, but our Lucy was black. They make lovely family dogs because of their placid nature.

We all miss our Lucy especially my human mom and dad.
I want to dedicate this quiz to my best doggy pal. Beautiful to look at and beautiful in personality.
Lucy you will live on in the hearts of everyone whoever met you.

It's Nipper's bedtime - goodnight quizzers and thank you for playing.
