Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Sometimes called 'timber' or 'tundra', which grey animal is a large member of the canine family?

Answer: Wolf

The only option listed which belongs to the canine, or dog, family is the wolf. The grey wolf is found in North America and many parts of Asia. Although many of the animals do have grey fur, they can be found with black, red or white coats.
2. 'Grey matter' is often used to describe which part of the human body?

Answer: Brain

The brain is often called 'grey matter' although it is actually more of a pinkish grey colour. Grey matter isn't just found in the brain, it is in other parts of the nervous system as well, such as the spinal cord, where it is referred to as the grey column.
3. Earl Grey is a type of which drink, usually served hot and associated with the English?

Answer: Tea

The tea is a mixture of tea with a flavouring of an orange variety called bergamot. The oil from bergamot is also used in perfumes, for its orange scent - not because it smells like tea. Earl Grey was a real person, one of the UK's Prime Ministers, but there are a few different stories about how his name came to be associated with the tea.
4. Lots of metals are grey in colour. Which of these is more of a reddish brown?

Answer: Copper

Copper can be used to describe a colour, as well as the metal, so you might have remembered that it is a shade that lies between red and brown. Copper, the metal, is one of the first to be found and used by mankind, and gets its name from the island of Cyprus.
5. You can tell the difference between African and Indian elephants because the African elephant has bigger ears.

Answer: True

Both African and Indian elephants (which are grey, and hence their presence in this quiz) use their ears to keep cool and one theory is that African elephants have bigger ears as Africa is hotter than India. There are some other differences, with African elephants being a bit taller, but it would be hard to spot this unless they were side by side.
6. The town of Kendal is located in Cumbria, in the north of England and is known as the Auld Grey Town. With which of these national parks is it associated?

Answer: Lake District

Kendal is also called 'the southern gateway to the Lake District, as it is only nine miles from England's largest lake, Lake Windermere. The Auld Grey Town sounds rather more Scottish than English, and refers to the colour of the limestone used to build most of the houses.

Dartmoor is in the south of England, the Brecon Beacons are in Wales and the Cairngorms are in Scotland, but they are all national parks.
7. If you are dressed in sackcloth and ashes, how are you likely to be feeling?

Answer: Sad or ashamed

The expression comes from the Bible, when people are described as literally wearing a very rough garment made from sackcloth and covering themselves with the grey ash from fires to show they were in mourning. It is also used, still in the Bible, to describe repentance for sin. These days, we still use the expression as a means of showing how sorry we are for some wrongdoing.
8. What kind of creature is the grey wagtail?

Answer: Bird

In the UK, at least, we're more familiar with the pied wagtail, a black and white version which seems to like car parks (parking lots). The grey wagtail is the same shape but with grey wings and a yellow breast. It's unmistakable, though, as it shares the distinctive bouncing movement of the tail which gives the birds their name.
9. As we get older, our hair often goes grey. What does the body stop producing to cause this?

Answer: Melanin

Melanin is a pigment and is responsible for the colour of our hair, our skin and our eyes. The more melanin you have, the darker your hair and skin will be. As we get older, hair follicles lose their supply of melanin, so our hair goes grey and then white as its colour fades.
10. Lady Jane Grey became Queen of England in 1553. How long did her reign last?

Answer: Nine days

Poor Lady Jane Grey. She was named by King Edward VI as his successor, since she followed the Protestant religion which Edward supported, while his half sister, Mary, was a Catholic. On Edward's death, Jane was proclaimed queen but was never crowned as Mary claimed the throne. Jane herself was executed in 1554, with her time as queen having lasted only from 10th to 19th July 1553.
