Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these heavenly bodies can we see very clearly from Earth because it is closer to us than many other objects?

Answer: The moon

The moon is what's known as a satellite of the Earth because it orbits (goes around) us. The moon is about 380,000 km away from Earth, which sounds like a long way, but is much closer than the closest planet, Venus, which is over 250 million km away!
2. Which planet is famous for its red appearance?

Answer: Mars

Mars looks red to us because of the iron oxides on its surface. It was called Mars after the Roman god of war.
3. Which planet is sometimes known as the 'evening star' because it is usually easy to see in the night sky?

Answer: Venus

Venus is usually the closest planet to Earth. I say usually because Mars sometimes comes a little closer when it orbits the sun. Venus is also sometimes called the 'morning star' because it can be seen in the morning at certain times of the year.
4. Which planet is the closest to our sun?

Answer: Mercury

Mercury is named after the god of travel because it moves very quickly compared to other planets. It only takes 88 Earth days to go around the sun.
5. The biggest planet in our solar system is also well known for its big red spot. What is it called?

Answer: Jupiter

Scientists have recently discovered the Jupiter's red spot is actually getting smaller. The red spot is a storm on the planet's surface that is bigger than the entire Earth!
6. The planet most famous for its rings is probably Saturn. But do any other planets in our solar system have rings?

Answer: Yes

Saturn, Uranus and Neptune all have rings that can be seen with powerful telescopes. Jupiter also has a ring, but it cannot be seen from the Earth because it is so thin.
7. Which planet is the seventh from the sun and was the first to be discovered with a telescope?

Answer: Uranus

Uranus was discovered in 1781 by an astronomer called William Herschel. He originally thought it was a comet.
8. Neptune is a long way from the Earth compared to other planets, and is much bigger in size than the Earth.

Answer: True

Neptune is a gas giant and over 17 times bigger than the Earth. Interestingly, it is smaller than its nearest planet Uranus, but because it has a very heavy atmosphere, it is much heavier.
9. This heavenly body, which shares its name with a cartoon character, was called a planet when discovered in 1930. In 2006 it started being called a minor or dwarf planet. What is it?

Answer: Pluto

Pluto is so far away from the sun that it is much colder than Earth. Its surface temperature goes below -200 degrees Celsius, or -300 degrees Fahrenheit.
10. What object is at the centre of our solar system and provides us with the light we need to live?

Answer: The sun

The sun is so big that over a million planets the size of Earth could fit into it! The solar system is named after the sun, which is traditionally called 'Sol'.
