Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A little boy, dressed from head to toe in this colour, is asleep instead of tending the sheep and cows.

Answer: Blue

"Little Boy Blue come blow your horn -----." If you 'blow your horn', you are showing off - maybe he liked to boast a bit. Sometimes nursery rhymes mean something a little different from what you first think.
2. What colour is the sheep who has three bags full of wool to share?

Answer: Black

"Baa Baa Black Sheep" is a nursery rhyme dating back to the middle ages and is sung to a tune similar to "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star".
3. The bear family come home to find half eaten porridge, a broken chair and a little girl asleep in baby bear's bed. What colour is her hair?

Answer: Gold

Goldilocks and the Three Bears is one of the most popular children's stories dating back to the 19th century. It is often made into a pantomime at Christmas time.
4. The owl and the pussycat set sail in a boat painted the same colour as which vegetable?

Answer: Pea

"The Owl and the Pussycat" is a 'nonsense' poem written by Edward Lear in 1871. "The Owl and the Pussycat went to sea in a beautiful pea-green boat. They took some honey, and plenty of money, wrapped up in a five pound note."
5. "Ring a ring o'roses, A pocket full of posies", are some of the words to a colourful rhyme that children sing as they make this loud noise as they all fall to the ground.

Answer: Sneezing

This is a very old rhyme about being unwell. The roses (which or often red) might refer to a red rash. Children hold hands and dance round in a circle. Everyone makes an 'a-tishoo' sound and tumbles to the ground.
6. What colour outfit is the little girl wearing when she meets a big bad wolf on her way to visit her sick grandmother?

Answer: Red

There are lots of different versions of Little Red Riding Hood from all over Europe. Sometimes it ends with the grandmother hiding in the wardrobe and sometimes the wolf eats up grandma!
7. Snow White has some little friends who work down a mine, but do you know how many?

Answer: Seven

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is a tale dating from about 1812 from the German Brothers Grimm who collected folk stories and then published them. Snow White was originally called Snow Drop.
8. Church bells are ringing but they sound like talking fruit! One is yellow and tastes sour. What are the bells saying?

Answer: Oranges and Lemons

"Oranges and Lemons, say the Bells of St. Clements" is a rhyme that mentions many London churches and the sounds they make. As a game, two people make an arch with raised arms and everyone runs through until the arms are dropped and someone is caught and is 'out'.
9. Which little girl has an unusual pet whose coat is white as snow and follows her everywhere, even to school?

Answer: Mary

"Mary had a Little Lamb" is thought to be based on a true story and is said to have been written in 1830 by an American from Boston, Sarah Hale.
10. What is supposed to be hidden at the end of a rainbow - if you can find it? (nobody has!)

Answer: Pot of Gold

A rainbow has seven colours - red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. An old Irish legend says there is a leprechaun looking after a pot of gold at the end of every rainbow. In reality, it is thought it is just the way the sun shines through the clouds sometimes so it appears as if there is a pot of gold at the end.
