Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When choosing a Jack Russell puppy, what is the LEAST important thing to consider?

Answer: If it matches the lead you just bought

If you have children you should be aware that a Jack Russell will not tolerate ear-pulling, or anything that may hurt it. Some breeders won't sell to a household with a child under a specific age. Also, you should choose a puppy which does not try to back away from you - an ideal puppy should be friendly, outgoing and healthy.
2. Which environment is best suited to a Jack Russell Terrier?

Answer: Countryside

Jack Russells require regular exercise as they have a lot of energy. They are hunting dogs and the majority love running. Sometimes the JR can also adapt to city life, but a countryside environment is the best, as there is a lot of space and many places to explore, such as fields and woods.
3. If you have allergies, a smooth-haired Jack Russell may not be for you.

Answer: True

Short-haired, smooth-coated dogs shed lots of hairs which could cause problems for people with allergies. Rough and broken JRs shed much less, but need to be groomed often. This works much better for people with allergies to deal with, as there will be fewer loose hairs around the house.
4. What colour on a Jack's coat should predominate, according to the breed standard?

Answer: White

According to the breed standard, the Jack Russell should be more than 51% white with black, brown or tan markings. Ears should be small, 'V' shaped drop ears, and eyes should be almond-shaped and dark.
5. If you own a Jack Russell, what is a necessity for your yard?

Answer: A fence which has no gaps

It is often useful to own a box containing their toys/bones so that people don't trip over them. Cages/crates are also useful so that the dog has a certain, comfortable place to sleep etc, but both are not necessary to own. As JRs are good swimmers, a river nearby may be an ideal place to go for a walk, but owners must supervise so accidents don't occur.

However, a good, safe fence is needed so your dog will not escape!
6. Which of these statements about Jack Russells is FALSE?

Answer: They are passive and don't require much attention

JRs require a lot of attention, and love to go for walks. If left unattended for long periods of time, they will find something to do, and it might include destroying something!
7. When should you NOT bring your puppy home?

Answer: During a busy holiday

Bringing your new Jack Russell home when there is a lot of noise and mess, such as at Christmas, may frighten him and he will not be able to adjust properly. This is especially true near Bonfire Night or the Fourth of July, as loud bangs from fireworks will make him scared, especially if he is not suited to your house and the people in it.
8. Jack Russells MUST have variety in their food.

Answer: False

This is false. If you spoil a dog with variety, it could possibly turn it into a 'fussy' eater. It isn't necessary to have a different meal every day, but some owners do like to supply their Jack Russell with different meals.
9. What is a benefit of caring for two Jack Russells rather than one?

Answer: Companionship for both dogs

When owners are out for long periods of time, dogs often get lonely. Therefore, when you have two dogs, they will often play together and keep each other company.

Jealousy can be a problem when caring for more than one dog, and they might be protective of the things they consider to be their own - for example, toys, bones and snacks. Favouritism can also be a problem, if the owner plays more often with one dog for example. Another potential issue is the cost of housing two dogs. For example, insurance and vet costs (as well as basics such as food) will be much higher than having just the one dog.
10. To which dog is the Jack Russell terrier closest in height?

Answer: A Beagle

Generally, a Jack Russell terrier is 10-15 inches (25-38 cm). A Chihuahua is 6-9 inches (15-23 cm) and is the smallest breed in the world, a Great Dane is 28-32 inches (71-81cm) and one of the tallest dog breeds, and a Doberman Pinscher is 24-28 inches (61-71cm). As a Beagle is 13-16 inches (33-41cm), it is the closest to a JR's height.
