Oz For All Ages Trivia Quiz

I love these books and think they can be enjoyed by readers of any age. L. Frank Baum was a social satirist, poking fun at American/human foibles. If you only know the movie, read and enjoy the books. He's like a gentler Twain or Swift.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What does the L. stand for in L. Frank Baum?

Answer: Lyman

Baum began his career as a journalist. The Oz books became so popular, he tired of them and wanted to move on, actually trying to end the series a couple of times. But, as with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes fans, his readers were so incensed, he was forced to continue the books. He wrote other books but none ever came close in durability or popularity.
2. How many Oz books are there (written by L. Frank Baum, not including other writer's sequels)?

Answer: 14

The first Oz book, "The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz" was published in 1900. The last volume was published in 1920. There was a much inferior group of sequels written by Ruth Plumly Thompson.
3. Which color is not associated with a country, city, or province of Oz?

Answer: Orange

Red is the color for the Quadling country, Purple for the Gillikin country, Blue for the Munchkin country, Yellow for The Winkie country, and the Emerald City, is, of course, Green. The flag of Oz shows a quadrant in each of the four colors, with the Emerald City in the middle.
4. In which Oz book does lovely Polychrome, Daughter of the Rainbow, NOT appear?

Answer: "Glinda Of Oz"

Polychrome first appears in "The Road To Oz"and is a welcome addition to any Oz book. She is beautifully illustrated by John R. Neill. She also appears in some of Baum's non-Oz books.
5. Billina, Dorothy's yellow hen, names all her hundreds of chicks just two names for simplicity's sake. The hens are all named Dorothy. What are the roosters named?

Answer: Daniel

No one in Oz is allowed to eat a chicken, but Billina generously allows them to have the eggs.
6. After Dorothy and Ozma become acquainted, and before Dorothy moves to Oz, what is the agreed time Ozma will check on Dorothy daily in her "Magic Picture", so Dorothy can signal if she needs help?

Answer: 4:00 p.m.

Dorothy conveniently forgets this in "Dorothy And The Wizard Of Oz" in which she goes through many dangers for a couple of days, remembering just in time to get to Oz for the book's climax!
7. The Cowardly Lion's friend, the Hungry Tiger, has a very naughty craving which he is never ever allowed to indulge in. What does the Hungry Tiger want to eat?

Answer: fat babies

While a little macabre, the Hungry Tiger's obsession is a really funny running gag throughout the series. Baum definitely had his dark little moments.
8. Which is not another name for the Nome King?

Answer: The Emerald Emperor

The Nome King, also known as the Metal Monarch, took a second name after he "forgot" his original first name in the climax of one of the books (not telling which one yet!). His full name was Roquat the Red.
9. What color is Ozma's hair described as in her very first appearance in the series?

Answer: gold

John R. Neill, the brilliant illustrator of all but the first of the Oz books, usually drew Ozma with raven black hair. But in "The Land of Oz," (the second book in the series), she is described (and drawn) as having "tresses of ruddy gold."
10. What are the first English words spoken by Toto in an Oz book?

Answer: "All right. Here I go."

This takes place in "Tik-Tok Of Oz." Toto, like all animals in Oz, could always talk while there, even though he wasn't born there. He just decided he didn't want to until Dorothy asked him to after discovering another American animal could speak. Even after that he was never exactly chatty.
