Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In Eric Carle's story, what creature is very busy?

Answer: spider

In Eric Carle's beautifully illustrated book, "The Very Busy Spider", you can even feel the pattern of the web that the spider is making.
2. Julia Donaldson created a strange creature with "terrible tusks and terrible claws, and terrible teeth in his terrible jaws". What name did she give him?

Answer: gruffalo

A mouse "invents" a gruffalo to save himself from being eaten by creatures of the forest, and then is amazed to actually meet one. Does he survive the encounter? Read this superb award winning book by Julia Donaldson, and find out!
3. In the story "Can't You Sleep, Little Bear?", what is the Little Bear afraid of?

Answer: the dark

Despite being given the biggest lantern of them all, Little Bear is still afraid of the dark that's all around, but is much comforted when Big Bear takes him outside and shows him "the moon and all the twinkly stars." Beautifully illustrated by Barbara Firth, this book by Martin Waddell is a firm favourite with all children.
4. In Eric Carle's book, what excuse did the bad tempered ladybird give for not fighting the creatures it met on its journey?

Answer: You're not big enough

The ladybird, unwilling to share the aphids on a leaf with another ladybird, takes itself off in a temper, threatening to fight every creature it comes across. However it is really a coward at heart, and after an unfortunate incident with the largest creature of all, a blue whale, it finds itself back on the leaf it started from, and is more than happy to share the aphids this time!
5. In "The Rainbow Fish" by Marcus Pfister, to which creature does the Rainbow Fish go for advice?

Answer: octopus

The wise octopus tells the proud and vain Rainbow Fish that, in order to be truly happy, he must share his shining, shimmering scales with the other fish. Does he act on the advice? Read this superbly illustrated story and see.
6. What sort of man did Jon Scieszka write about?

Answer: stinky cheese man

In his book "The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales", Jon Scieszka created a world of anarchy, turning traditional tales, including "The Gingerbread Man" upside down.
7. In the books by Arnold Lobel, which two creatures are friends?

Answer: Frog and Toad

Frog and Toad feature in several stories by Arnold Lobel and have helped countless children to learn to read.
8. In "Revolting Rhymes" by Roald Dahl, which character "whips a pistol from her knickers"?

Answer: Little Red Riding Hood

One of the most famous lines from Roald Dahl's book describes how the intrepid Little Red Riding Hood proves to be more than a match for the Big Bad Wolf. Once heard, never forgotten, children love the "naughtiness" of the line.
9. In Raymond Briggs' classic tale "The Snowman", where does the Snowman fly with the boy?

Answer: Brighton

In the book the distinctive shape of the Brighton Pavilion can be seen as the Snowman and the boy fly overhead. The episode where the Snowman takes the boy to visit Father Christmas is a feature of the film, not the book.
10. Which dog is the creation of author Eric Hill?

Answer: Spot the Dog

Spot is a favourite with young children all over the world. The "lift the flap" books provide great entertainment for toddlers.
