Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. You need a cue to play all the sports listed. Which one of them uses 22 balls in total?

Answer: Snooker

The cue is the long stick like object used to hit the balls. English billiards and carom billiards are played with only three balls. Pool has several versions, with different numbers of balls, but not 22. Snooker is played with 15 red balls, six different coloured balls (yellow, green, brown, blue, pink and black), which have different points values and one white cue ball.

The picture shows a snooker table with the balls set up at the beginning of the game.
2. The item in the picture is used in a game which also needs a racquet to hit it with. What is the game called?

Answer: Badminton

Badminton is played on indoor courts normally, with the shuttlecock (as shown in the picture) having to be hit over the net with the racquet. The shuttlecock shown is a traditional one, made with feathers, although they are often made from plastic. The shuttlecock is also known as a birdie in some parts of the world.
3. The 'stick' in the picture is used in which team game, which originated with the Native Americans of the USA?

Answer: Lacrosse

Lacrosse is a team game played with a small ball, which has to be caught in the net at the end of the lacrosse stick. There are reports of the game having been played in what is now America for hundreds of years, although the nets used in those early days look very different from the one in the photograph, which is a modern version.
4. To play this sport you need a horse as well as the mallets shown in the picture. The divisions of the game are called chukkas. What sport is it?

Answer: Polo

Riders compete in teams of four, riding specially developed horses referred to as polo ponies. The riders have a mallet, which must be held in the right hand even if the rider is normally left handed. The object of the game is to hit a ball into the opposition's goal. The game was first played thousands of years ago, possibly as far back as the sixth century BC, in Asia.
5. The sport which uses this bat is particularly associated with England, although it is also popular in other countries. Which of these is it?

Answer: Cricket

The game of cricket was definitely being played in Tudor England, and possibly earlier. It is played by two teams of eleven players. The original kind of international matches are called Test Matches, where teams from two countries play against each other over five days. Shorter versions of the game are also played. Apart from England, cricket is played at international level by countries like South Africa, Australia, India and Sri Lanka.

The photo shows a bat used by one of the most famous crickets of all time, the Australian Sir Donald Bradman.
6. The target in the picture is used in which of these sports, normally played indoors?

Answer: Darts

Some people might argue that darts isn't really a sport, but it does have several championships so I've included it. Small, pointed missiles, called darts, are thrown at the board with the score being the total of the numbered sections in which the darts land.

The middle of the board is called the bull's eye. Archery isn't an indoor sport and bowls and quoits do not use targets like the one in the photograph.
7. This is another sport for which you need a horse. It can be the first part of a sport called eventing or an sport on its own. Which sport, where the horse and rider have to perform certain movements, is it (the photo clue might help)?

Answer: Dressage

In eventing, sometimes called the three day event, dressage is the first section followed by a ride across country, over different types of obstacles and a final round of show jumping. The dressage element, either as part of the longer event or in its own right, is designed to show that the horse and rider can work together and follow a set of movements laid down for them. Some of the movements can be intricate and involve changes of pace from the horse, while the rider has to give as little guidance as possible.

The picture is nothing to do with horses, but is of a dress to guide you towards the right answer.
8. Which sport, played on ice, uses the equipment in the photograph?

Answer: Curling

All the sports listed need ice, but the picture is of a curling stone. This sport originated in Scotland a long time ago, in the sixteenth century although it was played outdoors then. The idea of the sport is to slide the stone along the ice to get it as close as possible to the target, called a house, at the other end of the ice rink. It became part of the Winter Olympic Games in 1998.
9. The motor racing sport in which drivers like Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna have been world champions is known as which of these?

Answer: Formula One

Formula One is the highest level of motor racing for only one driver. The races are held on circuits around the world, from Australia to the USA and in many European and Asian countries. Points are awarded depending upon where the driver finishes in the race and there is also a competition for the team which owns the cars that are driven. Alain Prost was champion in 1985, 1986, 1989 and 1993 while Ayrton Senna won in 1988, 1990 and 1991.
10. Although you probably know horses are used in races, did you know dogs can race too? Which dogs, known for their speed, are normally used?

Answer: Greyhounds

Although all these dogs could run, the fastest dogs are greyhounds who are used to race around tracks chasing a pretend rabbit, called a lure. In the UK there are over twenty different tracks, mainly in England, in 2015, including in Doncaster, Birmingham and Poole. There used to be many more, but the sport is not as popular as it used to be.

The photo shows a race in progress.
