Brock had to look after his brothers and sisters because his father left to become a Pokemon trainer, and his mother died of a broken heart. But after the return of Flint (Brock's father), Brock was alowed to leave and join Ash, Misty and Pikachu on their Pokemon Journey.

They were Pikachu (Electric), Butterfree (Bug) and Pigeotto (Flying). Metapod evolved into Butterfree just before they left the Viridian Forest.
