Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following is not a description of the Eighty once the others wake up?

Answer: Survivor

Cheese describes the condition that a dead person has become. They are moldy, thus "cheese." Job's father is an example of this sort of death. Crater describes the way the holes have been drilled into some of the dead from the deadly micrometeorites. Facelift is the way they label people whose skin was stretched and dried out over their bones, like Job's mother. Wakers, not Survivors, are everyone who is able to properly wake up from their five-hundred year slumber.
2. Who did Yago appoint as leader?

Answer: Wylson Lefkowitz-Blake

Yago desperately wanted to be leader but knew most people would be more comfortable with an adult. So he basically shoved Wylson into the role. He felt he would be a good number two for the Remnants, and eventually take over the role as leader.
3. Of the following, who is hurt the least in the book?

Answer: Wylson

Errol and Big Bill died in the novel. Miss Blake lost a finger when a worm entered her and Jobs removed it. Errol was the one who took the Rider weapon away from Wylson, unwillingly entering in a battle to the death. He was stabbed to death by his challenger. Big Bill woke up feeling pain in his leg.

It turned out he was infested with worms. Billy, his adopted son, ended his life, and his suffering.
4. Which of the following artists is not mentioned in this novel?

Answer: Jonathon Barkat

Jonathon Barkat did the cover of the book, but he is not mentioned in this novel. When the Wakers first encounter this new world, the landscape is a mixture of Bonnard and Adams. One side of the world, Adams, is black and white with huge mountains. The other side, Bonnard, is much more colorful.

It has a beautiful, oddly flowing sky with multi-colored clouds and different grasses. It also features a river, which the Wakers gratefully drink from. Later, in Brueghel, they see a village with pigs, chickens, and people doing the same things repeatedly in a loop.

The Temple of Babel is also present near the village.
5. Who is described in the book as being a "Jane"?

Answer: Violet

She prefers to be called Miss Blake. A "Jane" is a girl who has chosen to live her life artistically, rejecting the high-tech world she lives in. She is said to be obsessed with Jane Austen, even going as far as talking like the characters in her works. Violet slowly sheds this stereotype as the novel progresses, showing toughness and bravery, unlike her mother Wylson.
6. At the end of the novel, how many are still alive and awake (not including the missing eight)?

Answer: Twenty

Okay, here we go: Jobs, Mo'Steel, Violet, 2Face, Edward, TR, Burroway, Wylson, Yago, Anamull, Billy, Olga, Roger Dodger, Tate, Kubrick, his father Alberto DiSalvo, Shy Hwang, D-Caf, Tamara, and The Baby. Of the original eighty, these are the only ones left. Big Bill, Errol, and Connie Huerta were original Wakers but passed away afterward.
7. Which of the following creatures is not introduced in this book?

Answer: Slicers

The worms devoured many of the eighty, including Big Bill Weir. They are numerous and green in color. The Riders arrive and challenge the Wakers to battle. They travel on round discs that hover above the air and are rust-colored. The Blue Meanies appear late in the book, flying in through a hole in the massive ship.

They are large animals and have blue skin/armor. They also wear clumsy flight suits.
8. Who coined the term "Blue Meanies?"

Answer: Mo'Steel

"Caught a ride back inside with one of those Blue Meanies." This is the first name given to them. Mo says it once, and everyone calls them that the rest of the series. He was also the very first one to see them, because he was caught in the tornado that dragged him down into space, where they awaited.

The Blue Meanies, who sneak in the ship after tearing through it, are huge and powerful. Jobs counts "thirty or forty" of them making it on board before the ship repairs itself.
9. In the year 2011, many change their names. Which of the following names is not a birth-given name?

Answer: Jobs

Jobs was born Sebastian Andreeson. He read about Steven Jobs' life and decided to change his name. Mo'Steel was born Romeo Gonzalez. Mo'Steel is short for either "Man of Steel" or "More Steel." He chose it at an early age and cannot remember which. Dallas Blake is now Violet Blake, or Miss Blake.

She says to her mother "Dallas is not a name that pleases me." Harlin Melman is also known as D-Caf. This is because when he is close to anyone, he unconsciously grows twitchy and can't stay still.
10. Which of the following people woke up first?

Answer: Violet Blake

Violet was one of the original larger group of people to awaken. She is one of the central characters. Tate, who does not speak in this book, woke up with Roger Dodger and Anamull. Burroway arrives to the group alone. Bill Weir and TR arrive together, with the latter supporting the worm-infested Weir.
