Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Why did Billy think that Mo'Steel was a figment of his imagination?

Answer: He was too brave

From the moment Billy woke up, he struggled to realize he was conscious and awake. It didn't help that he was usually near Mo' Steel, who was brave and adventurous, almost to a ruthless extent. Billy thought "Mo' Steel can't be a real. A real person would be afraid..." Billy also admitted, still thinking he's dreaming, that he himself would be afraid.

He wanted to ask Mo a question but thought "What's the point in talking to a figment of your imagination?"
2. Who sat in a chair in the "basement" of the ship and ended up with a scrambled brain?

Answer: Alberto DiSalvo

Billy, Mo'Steel, and Kubrick first thought the man was dead, but Alberto was able to walk after sitting in the alien chair. It turned out he had inadvertently found a way to interact with the ship's computer. But his fragile mind could not handle it.

He walked around speaking gibberish: "Where is everyone?...I like Birthday cake...I could serve the tea and biscotti, why wasn't I invited? Drifting!" He stumbled around and fell on his knees often. Kubrick and the others helped him move about for throughout the rest of the novel.
3. Who saved the Remnants from attacking British ships?

Answer: A giant Mo' Steel

Jobs and the others, after being attacked by a suddenly appearing fleet of British ships, loaded their cannons and fired. They managed to do some damage but took on too much of their own. From below, Billy was able to make Mo'Steel a giant. Mo kicked and threw the opposing ships for his friends. Being the thrill-seeker he was, Mo'Steel loved every minute of it.
4. Which characters got in a fist-fight?

Answer: Kubrick and Mo'Steel

The hotheaded Kubrick shoved Mo' Steel when he was asked to lead the others. Mo recovered his balance and the two fought. Soon Kubrick realized he felt no pain as he was getting punched. He quit and Mo suggested Kubrick was superhuman, "impervious to pain." Mo was envious, and Kubrick was merely depressed he couldn't feel the pain.
5. Which completely new environment did the Remnants find themselves in?

Answer: Billy's thoughts

Billy Weir decided to sit in the chair that would allow him to interact with the ship. Immediately the Remnants were moved from the freezing water to a foreign world. It was a mixture of his war-torn home country and his life in America that included his school and a McDonald's.
6. 2Face found herself in a restaurant. What did she order?

Answer: Supersize fries, a large Coke, milk, apple pie, side salad

Yes, 2Face wound up in a McDonald's, where an acne-infested employee asked "You want fries with that?" She ordered and then met Yago, Jobs, Edward, and Violet. The restaurant was filled with a mixture of high-school students and injured soldiers. Fans of K.A. Applegate might find this scene familiar.

In "The Andalite Chronicles," the writer placed a character in a McDonald's. She ordered fries and Coke and was also served by a pimply employee!
7. Which enemy emerged from the new environment?

Answer: An entirely female army

The muscle-bound women carried ornate weapons and were very hostile. They immediately attacked the soldiers in the restaurant. They were also seen chasing the other Remnants. It was believed that they were characters from a comic book Billy read when he was young.
8. Which famous painting did the Remnants fall into in this book?

Answer: Edward Hopper's "Nighthawks"

The gang spent all of book three, "Them," in Bosch's "Last Judgment". The famous diner scene, "Nighthawks", was shown. The Remnants had hidden in Billy's house and escaped. But they only escaped into a vast black area, where nobody could see or feel anything. The diner showed up and comforted the Remnants with its familiar look and warm lighting.
9. Who was a new character in this book?

Answer: Kubrick

Lance and Alvin were not characters in the story. Kubrick and his father woke up late, much later than the others. The two fell asleep again and woke up in an odd alien laboratory. Kubrick woke lying on an invisible table surrounded by machines. The dusty machines ripped all of his skin, hair, and nails completely off of his body. He felt no pain at all.
10. Which weapon worked surprisingly well on the Riders?

Answer: Shaving cream

The Remnants have a limited amount of time to find a weapon to use against the dozens of Riders chasing them. Mo'Steel found a BB gun and 2Face armed herself with a baseball bat. Jobs found shaving cream and was silently mocked by 2Face. The BB pellets hardly had an effect on the Riders and 2Face didn't use the bat much. Jobs was commended for spraying the shaving cream in a Rider's eyes.

It caused the alien to scream.
