Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the first person listed as dead in the story?

Answer: Kubrick

Right at the beginning of the book, Kubrick was listed as dead. He had died trying to save 2Face's life. He fought against the mutant Charlie, who had thrown his porcupine-like body into 2Face. He had been trying to kill Billy but ended up hurting 2Face. Kubrick grew furious and continuously hit Charlie. Apparently, he perished.
2. What did 2Face want from Violet?

Answer: To be infested with worms

2Face was shocked to realize she wanted to keep the others safe because she cared about them. So she asked Violet to give her the newly revealed mutation. 2Face felt she could save lives, as well. But Violet refused, citing the fact that she had failed to save Tamara and the risk was too great. 2Face eventually threw a boomerang and let it kill her, forcing Violet to give her the worm mutation.
3. The Troika was introduced officially in this novel. What exactly was it?

Answer: A mutated group of humans in the basement

The Troika, a name given to the mutants by Billy, consisted of Amelia, Duncan, and Charlie. They were angry with the Remnants for changing Mother's course. Charlie killed Kubrick and attempted to kill Billy. They were all mutants, and communicated with the others by means of a willing Blue Meanie.
4. Who said the following line: "I still believe there is no such thing as going home"?

Answer: Violet

In the beginning, Violet was opposed to going back to Earth. She only changed her mind after the senseless killing of TR by the Blue Meanies. She regretted her change of mind and still believed going back to Earth would only break all of their hearts.
5. Who discovered they had a new mutation in this book?

Answer: Tate

Yago had had a mutation for a while- he had the Touch, something that gave Blue Meanies great joy and made them turn against their brothers. Violet revealed her mutation much earlier, and Jobs had never shown any type of change. Tate revealed, albeit unknowingly, her mutation when she caught Yago breaking curfew and walking suspiciously among the sleeping Remnants.

She lost control of her body and began to bite Yago. She could only see red. Anamull told her she looked like a bear with a large mouth. Tate later called her mutation the Mouth.
6. The Remnants spent time searching the remains of Earth. Of the following, which could NOT be found on the surface of the planet?

Answer: Water

The planet was gray and dead. Almost all anyone could see was miles of ash. Half of it was in complete darkness, and the other half was bright and dry. In between was a mixture of the two. The Remnants struggled to breathe the air on the planet. Also, the gravity was lower than it used to be.
7. Of the following, what was NOT found by a Remnant?

Answer: Swiss Army Knife

Jobs watched Edward pick up a destroyed baseball. Roger Dodger found a dog fossil and sadly threw it away. Noyze found a sentimental item- the plate reminded her of having Sunday dinners with her grandma. All in all, the Remnants found mostly ruined buildings and ash-covered trash.
8. Where on planet Earth did the Remnants land?

Answer: Tokyo, Japan

It was Violet's theory that Mother ended up in Japan. Olga admitted she had just assumed they had landed in America. But Violet found a fossilized family sitting together on their knees at a table. The family ate with chopsticks and sat on a tatami mat that had melted into the ground. Later, Noyze found a sign that proved they were in Tokyo.
9. What gave Jobs so much hope for living on Earth?

Answer: A tiny seedling in the ground

Jobs had Billy create tomato seeds. He removed as much unnatural radiation as he could from Earth's ashes and combined it with the seeds. His heart soared when the Remnants found a three-inch long seedling growing out of the ground. Olga thought it smelled like basil, which should have thrown Jobs off. As it turned out, Yago had planted the basil root and tricked Jobs.
10. In the beginning of the novel, the Remnants numbered seventeen (including Kubrick). At the end, how many were left? Don't include the Missing Eight.

Answer: Thirteen

The Missing Eight included the Troika. Kubrick died saving 2Face. Dr. Cohen was injured and eventually died afterward in the last book- she was only mentioned in passing. Tamara was killed by the Blue Meanies, who tricked her. Violet tried to save her life but learned an important lesson when she realized it was too late, and the worms had a time limit to save lives. Finally, Burroway was killed by a pillar of fire from the earth. Only Violet, Tate, Mo'Steel, Jobs, Edward, Roger Dodger, D-Caf, Anamull, Olga, Yago, 2Face, Billy, and Noyze remained out of the original eighty.
