Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What kids' game consists of two opposing teams in a park or field and two different banners on a stick or pole?

Answer: Capture the Flag

In the game Capture the Flag, opposing teams set their flags at opposite sides of a field and the object is for a member of a team to grab the opposing team's flag and bring it to their home base without getting tagged by a team member from the team that had their flag stolen.
2. This schoolyard game consists of two opposing teams, a medium-to-large ball, and a desire to not get clobbered.

Answer: Dodge Ball

In Dodge Ball, two teams throw balls at each other in order to knock that person out of the game. What ever team has the last man standing without being hit, wins.
3. This game is played with three people, two bases, two mitts, and a baseball.

Answer: Pickle

In Pickle, two bases are spread about twenty to thirty feet apart. The two people with mitts stand near each base and the runner stands on one of the bases. The two players with mitts begin to throw the ball back and forth and the runner has to time the throws and take off to the other base without being tagged out. Three outs and the runner becomes a thrower, and the game continues. No scoring, but good exercise.
4. This schoolyard game consists of a long anchored pole with a rope and ball attached to it and requires two participants.

Answer: Tether Ball

In Tether Ball, the object is to strike the tethered ball and back and forth until one player is able to wrap the tether completely around the pole and the ball touches the pole.
5. This schoolyard game requires a large, four-sided regular polygon be drawn on the playground. Then the polygon is bisected into four smaller polygons. Play requires four players and a basketball sized, air filled rubber ball.

Answer: Square Ball or Four Square

In Square Ball or Four Square, each of the four players stands in one of the four inner squares. Players must hit the ball into any of the other players' square on a bounce, and that player tries to bounce it back into another player's square. If a player misses the ball, or hits the ball outside the boundary, he is out and play restarts and continues till one player is left.
6. This schoolyard game requires two teams of kids facing each other at opposite ends of a playing field and forming barricades by holding their hands together.

Answer: Red Rover

In this game, kids form two opposing lines and attempt to "break through" the opposing team's line. At first, two teams are chosen of equal size, and they form two lines, facing each other and holding hands. One side starts by picking a person on the opposing team and saying "Red Rover, Red Rover, send *kid's name*, right over.

The kid named then lets go of his teammates and begins rushing for the other line. His goal is to break through the line by overpowering the other kids' hold on each other. If he is able to break through, he gets to take one kid from that team to join his team. If he can't break through, he is forced to join the opposing team.
7. Great game to play alone or have your friends join in. All you need is chalk and a small object. What is it?

Answer: Hopscotch

Using the chalk draw numbered squares on the tarmac in a row with some joining on the side. Using a small object (usually a pebble) throw into one of the numbers squares, then you hop on one foot and retrieve the pebble and hop back.
8. A game you can play by yourself or with a group using one type of equipment.

Answer: Skipping or Jump Rope

Skipping or jump rope can be done by yourself or played with your friends such as jumping rope in a relay where one person jumps to a line and returns, then the second player jumps to a line and return, and so on. Another version is using a long rope held at each other by a person, swinging the rope another player jumps. Double dutch is using two long ropes that are swung in opposite directions, much harder for the jumper to achieve.
9. What game consists of running around avoiding someone who is "it" but not avoiding a player who can unfreeze them?

Answer: Freeze Tag

In Freeze Tag, a player is designated "it" and that person freezes the other players by touching them. There's also another player who can unfreeze the frozen person by doing some activity, usually either crawling through their legs or touching that person.

The game ends in one of several ways, including but not limited to: either only one person is left unfrozen, until everyone is frozen, or whenever the players agree to end the game.
10. This game consists of a group of kids sitting in a circle and one kid tapping the sitting kids on the head.

Answer: Duck, Duck, Goose

In Duck, Duck, Goose, children sit in a circle and one child walks around the circle tapping the sitting children and saying duck, duck, duck continuously. The child then touches one of the children and says "Goose". The goose must then chase the tapper around the circle and tag him/her before he/she gets to the open spot where the goose was.
