Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Acids always have a pH value of less than what number?

Answer: 7

Acids have a pH value always less than 7. pH value stands for potential hydrogen. It tells us about the concentration of hydrogen ions in a solution. A pH less than 7 means a solution is acidic. A pH of exactly 7 indicates that a solution is neutral, like pure water. A pH value of more than 7 indicates the compound is basic.
2. Earth is the second largest planet in our solar system.

Answer: False

The largest planet in the solar system is Jupiter. Its diameter is nearly 143000 km. Earth's diameter is nearly 12400 km which makes it the fifth largest planet in our solar system after Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. Comparing the distance from the Sun to other planets, Earth occupies third position after Mercury and Venus.
3. Which type of energy is most likely to be possessed by a flying aeroplane?

Answer: Kinetic energy

A flying aeroplane possess mass and velocity and thus possess kinetic energy. Kinetic energy is defined as the energy possessed by a moving body. For calculating the kinetic energy we can multiply the mass of the object by the square of its velocity and then divide by two.
4. Leaves of plants are green due to a pigment called chloroplast.

Answer: False

The leaves of plants are green not due to chloroplast but due to chlorophyll. Chlorophyll is the pigment that provides green color to leaves. Chloroplasts are actually plant organelles that contain chlorophyll that helps in photosynthesis.
5. In the dark, we cannot see anything (or very little) due to what?

Answer: Lack of light

Humans can see things when light comes to our eyes after reflecting from the surface of the object we want to see. In the absence of light no reflection takes place thus we are unable to see anything. We need artificial light sources such as a torch, lamp etc at night that produce light for reflection so we are able to see things at night. Birds such as owls have very large pupils that cause much more light to come inside their eyes that makes them able to see things much more clearly at night than humans can.
6. If a metal reacts with an acid, which gas is always produced?

Answer: Hydrogen

Whenever we react an active metal with an acid it always releases hydrogen gas. When metals react with acids, they form the corresponding salt and release hydrogen gas. For example, if we react aluminium with hydrochloric acid then the salt aluminium chloride is formed with the liberation of hydrogen gas.
7. All metals are solid at room temperature (25 degree celsius) except this one. Which metal is it?

Answer: Mercury

Mercury, or quicksilver, is a liquid at room temperature. Its melting point is approximately -40 degrees celsius. It is a good conductor of heat but bad conductor of electricity. Gallium, cesium, and francium are also metals with low melting points (below 30 degrees celsius) but still exist as solids at room temperature. Mercury is used in thermometers.
8. Which of the following is not an acid-base indicator?

Answer: Green cabbage juice

Green cabbage is a common vegetable that we eat. It is not an indicator. Methyl orange is an indicator which turns red in acid and yellow in base. Phenolphthalein is an indicator which is colourless itself and remains colourless in acid but gets pink in base. Red cabbage juice can be used as indicator. It turns red or magenta in acid and greenish-blue in base.
9. The element bromine is a non metal.

Answer: True

Bromine is a non metal. It is the only non metal that exists in a liquid state at room temperature. Its symbol is Br. Its atomic number is 35 which means it has 35 protons in its nucleus. It is a halogen and can be found in 17th group and 4th period of periodic table.
10. Which of the following is NOT a nutrient present in our food?

Answer: Carbodehydrate

Carbodehydrate is not a nutrient found in our food. We eat food which can contain fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, proteins and water. Protein helps in building our body. Carbohydrates and fats provides us energy. Vitamins are essential for our body as they improve our immunity. Minerals are needed in small amounts in our body but are still very important for proper functioning of the body.
