Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. It's winter, and Peter calls another Secret Seven meeting out in the freezing cold shed. Jack can't remember the password, but somehow his sister Susie STILL finds out what it is! She brings along a French boy who is staying with Jack and Susie's family. His name is Jean Baptiste Boneparte. What is his nickname?

Answer: Bony

Bony is a boy Jack met when he went to France the year before.

The password is "Toad-in-the-hole". Susie overheard Jack repeating it to himself, but somehow he still managed to forget it! Peter told Jack not to bring Bony with him as he's not a member of the Secret Seven, so he's very angry when Susie shows up and brings him along.
2. Peter is very angry! He had told Jack not to bring Jean Baptiste along, but to have annoying Susie there as well is the last straw. Peter and Jack have a big argument; Jack throws his badge at Peter's feet and leaves the Secret Seven! Everyone is very shocked. What happens next?

Answer: The children write a letter to Jack begging him to come back

It's a very nasty argument. Peter tells Jack he shouldn't be a member of the Secret Seven if he can't remember the passwords or wear his badge. Jack says he has his badge in his pocket but didn't want Susie to know where he was off to, and it's not his fault if Susie is a nuisance.

Jack says he had better leave the group and with that he is gone. Peter feels bad and regrets what he has said so the children agree to write a letter apologising and asking Jack to come back. They all sign it, including Scamper.
3. The next night there's another meeting. Everyone is there except Jack when there is a knock at the door. It's Susie again! What does she want?

Answer: She brings them a letter from Jack saying he's not coming back.

Susie delivers the reply letter from Jack. He tells them that he's made his decision and won't be coming back. Instead, he will be forming his own group with Susie, Binkie, Bony and three other friends. They will be the new Secret Seven, and Peter's group will be the Secret Six!
4. Christmas comes and goes and things are still not right. In the new year it snows and Peter and Janet are excited, until something bad happens: there are thieves about and they're stealing pedigree dogs! When the news first breaks, which of these dogs are NOT reported missing?

Answer: Scamper: Peter and Janet's own pedigree spaniel

Matt the shepherd comes round to see if anyone has seen his sheep-dog, Shadow. He has gone missing. Matt says he wouldn't leave his side for anything and thinks he must have been stolen. Soon after, Pam arrives in tears. Her Granny's little white poodle, Snowy, has also been taken.

When Peter's dad calls the police, he learns that three other valuable dogs have been reported missing. The children worry about Scamper but he is safe...for now!
5. Whoever is taking the dogs is leaving very large footprints behind in the snow. Peter and Janet go up to the hills with their dad and find a footprint near to where one of the dogs was taken. Peter makes a sketch of it, but it turns out to be a red herring. Who made this footprint in the snow?

Answer: Matt the shepherd

Peter and Janet go up to see Matt the shepherd with a policeman. They are excited to see a very large pair of footprints in the snow, and Peter copies it down very carefully. He shows it to the policeman who notices straight away that it's the same as the footprints Matt is leaving in the snow.
6. The next day, Janet goes to do some shopping. She sees a notice at the police station saying that NINE dogs have now been reported missing. She bumps into Susie, Binkie and Jean Baptiste. What unusual thing does she notice about Jean Baptiste?

Answer: Every dog nearby seems to love him and come over to him to be petted

Janet is out at the shops with Scamper before the next Secret Six meeting. She sees Susie, Binkie and Bony and notices that Jack isn't with them. Janet sees that Scamper is really excited to see Bony and licks his hands, and then other dogs start coming over as well. Susie says that all dogs love Bony.
7. The children are all very upset when another dog gets stolen. After ruling out all their suspects, they decide to go and look for men with big feet who could be the thief. Colin sees someone he thinks looks suspicious. Who does Colin see?

Answer: A tall, heavy man with big feet, carrying a dog

During one of their meetings, Scamper is let out into the garden and when the meeting is over he is nowhere to be seen. It seems he has been stolen! Peter and his dad go through everybody who has visited the house that day and rule them out one by one until nobody is left. Peter calls another meeting to tell the others what has happened and they decide to go out themselves to look for large men with big feet. Colin says the policeman who visited the house had big feet.

He goes to sit outside the police station and observe the people.

He sees a large man with big feet, carrying a dog! He follows the man all the way home, and ends up having cake with him and his mother. The man is not the thief.
8. Barbara and Pam hear barking and think they might have found where the dogs are being kept, but it's only a house belonging to dog breeders. While they are out they see Jack who is also trying to solve the mystery. Jack thinks the thief must be someone the dogs know. Who does Jack think is the thief?

Answer: The postman

Barbara and Pam investigate a house where they can hear a lot of dogs barking. They try calling the names of the missing dogs, but only attract the attention of the owners who set their own dog on the girls! They pass Jack, who is busy working out who the thief is, even though he has left the Secret Seven.

He helps Mrs Hughes home after she is frightened by a dog. He thinks the thief must be someone the dogs know well. He watches the postman on his rounds, talking to all the local dogs. The postman might be the thief! But how would he be able to steal the dogs without people seeing him? Jack follows the postman to his house, and hears him say that he is going out to make another delivery when it is "Nice and dark".
9. Jack goes to do some more investigating at the house where he thinks the thief lives. He sees something suspicious in the garden shed and goes to see Peter and Janet. What did Jack see in the shed?

Answer: A pair of enormous boots

Jack goes to visit the postman's house while he is out and sneaks into the shed. Inside he sees a very large pair of boots! The postman only has small feet. It looks like he has been wearing the boots to fool people. He hears someone coming and runs away back over the garden wall, but not before he sees the postman driving up in his post van.

He realises that the postman is probably using the van to steal the dogs. He runs off to tell Peter and Janet and their dad, who takes Jack to the police station to tell them what he has seen.
10. The mystery is solved and the thief is caught. Jack is the hero of the day and Scamper gets a big, juicy bone. Everyone is reunited with their beloved dogs. Which one of them gives this moving speech at the end of the book? "Like a brother I grieved for you, and my heart was full of sorrow...I knew you'd come, old dog, I knew you'd come. We'll lie down to sleep in peace tonight - just you and me together."

Answer: Matt the shepherd - to Shadow

The postman is the thief! He has been wearing the big boots, calling the dogs he knows to follow him and putting them in his van. He takes them to his second-cousin who is a vet, to be taken care of until they can safely sell them. Scamper and Shadow and all the other dogs come safely home, and Jack is the hero of the day for solving the mystery. Peter and Janet persuade him to come back to the Secret Seven again and he agrees.

Shadow runs straight home back to Matt the Shepherd's house up on the hills, and when he claws at the door. Matt rushes to let him in, happily reunited with his faithful friend and asking him "where have you come from on this cold night of stars? Did you guess I was waiting for you every hour of the day and night?"
