Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Paddington Bear is the creation of author Michael Bond. With whom does Paddington come to live?

Answer: The Browns

The Browns adopt Paddington when they find him at Paddington Station in London. He joins Mr and Mrs Brown and their children Jonathan and Judy and is treated much like a third (if slightly eccentric) child.
2. A boy named Shasta arrived in Narnia from Calormen in C.S. Lewis's story "The Horse and His Boy". What was Shasta's real name?

Answer: Prince Cor of Archenland.

Prince Cor, twin brother of Prince Corin of Archenland, had been stolen as a baby and sold as a slave. Arriving in Narnia, he is mistaken for Prince Corin, and finally gains his rightful place as King Lune's elder son and heir.
3. Who was the stranger who came to stay with the Banks family to look after children Jane, Michael, John and Barbara?

Answer: Mary Poppins

Mary Poppins, the creation of P.L. Travers, is the nanny who arrives to look after the Banks children. She is opinionated and a bit brusque, but the children grow to love her. Nurse Matilda is a slightly similar character from "Nurse Matilda" by Christianna Brand, and Aunt Maria is from Diana Wynne Jones' "Black Maria".
4. What was strange about Pippi Longstocking, the girl who moved in next door to Tommy and Annika in Astrid Lindgren's book "Pippi Longstocking"?

Answer: All these are correct.

Pippi lived with her horse and a monkey called Mr Nelson, waiting for her father to return from a voyage. He arrived in the second book "Pippi Goes Aboard", and in "Pippi in the South Seas" Pippi, Tommy and Annika all sailed to Canny Canny Island.
5. Why was Gemma Bow so different from her cousins, the Robinsons, in the Gemma books by Noel Streatfeild?

Answer: She was a child film star.

Gemma Bow was the child filmstar daughter of Rowena Alston and her ex-husband Basil Bow. When her film career faded, she went to stay with Rowena's sister, Mrs Robinson, who had children Ann, Lydia and Robin (really Sebastian).
6. What is odd about Janet Chant, who arrives at Chrestomanci Castle in Diana Wynne Jones' book "Charmed Life"?

Answer: She comes from another world.

Janet is from another world (which may be ours) and she is shunted into Cat Chant's world when his sister banishes herself. Janet takes a while to settle down, but Cat eventually accepts her. Cat was born with nine lives.
7. In Monica Edwards' book "Strangers to the Marsh", who or what are the strangers?

Answer: A pair of hoopoes

A pair of hoopoes is nesting at Cloudsley Castle. Tamzin Grey and her friends try to protect them. The Lillycrops live in Tamzin's home town of Westling, a puma appears in "The Wild One", another Monica Edwards title, and Lesley Frampton, temporarily crippled, appears in another Romney Marsh title.
8. In "Jill and the Perfect Pony", by Ruby Ferguson, what is strange about Jill when she goes off to be part of a team?

Answer: She is pretending to be someone else.

Jill Crewe meets a girl named Amanda who has a perfect pony named Plum. Amanda doesn't want to join a riding team, so she persuades Jill to take her place. Jill, angry at being conned, tries to blacken Amanda's reputation by behaving in a haughty and horrible fashion, but eventually she is forced to reveal her real self.
9. What is strange about the visitors knowN as "the Ds" in Arthur Ransome's "The Picts and the Martyrs"?

Answer: They are hidden from Nancy and Peggy's great aunt.

The Ds (Dorothea and Dick Callum) are friends of Nancy and Peggy Blackett. Mrs Blackett has gone away for a while, and the Ds have come to keep the Blackett girls company. Alas, the GA (Great Aunt Maria Turner) announces that she is coming to "look after" the girls. Nancy fears the GA will be angry with Mrs Blackett for allowing Nancy and Peggy to have visitors while she's away. Nancy and Peggy hide the Ds from the GA.
10. What is strange about Luke, the boy who comes to visit David in Diana Wynne Jones' book "Eight Days of Luke"?

Answer: He is Loki, god of mischief.

Luke is really Loki, god of mischief, who has been imprisoned in a dungeon until David accidentally lets him out. Luke appears whenever David lights a match, and the two have some rather hairraising adventures. But David isn't the only one interested in Luke...
