Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Struwwelpeter" was written in the nineteenth century by this man:

Answer: Heinrich Hoffmann

Heinrich Hoffmann was the head of a psychiatric hospital in Frankfurt. At the time there was no such thing as a "child psychiatrist" but Hoffmann established a special department for children in his hospital.
2. What was the occasion "Struwwelpeter" was written for?

Answer: Christmas

Hoffmann was searching in vain for a book he considered interesting and imaginative enough for his three-year-old son, so he decided to make his own.
3. What was the author's intent when he wrote the "Struwwelpeter" stories?

Answer: To amuse children

The original title of the book was "Lustige Geschichten und Drollige Bilder" (Funny Stories and Comical Pictures). In his work as a physician, Hoffmann used drawings and stories to distract and amuse his young patients.
4. Which famous American author wrote a translation of "Struwwelpeter"?

Answer: Mark Twain

The translation is still available and even on the Internet: http://www.fln.vcu.edu/struwwel/twpete.html
5. What does the name of the title character, "Struwwelpeter", refer to?

Answer: Poor hygiene

"Struwwelpeter" (Slovenly Peter) did not let anybody comb or cut his hair or trim his nails "for at least a year". "Bad Frederick" gets bitten by a dog for his vicious behaviour towards animals and people; "Soup Caspar" is the child who starves to death "on the fifth day" because he won't eat his soup; and "The Inky Boys" are being dunked into a giant ink pot by St. Nicholas for making fun of a Black child.
6. In one of the stories in "Struwwelpeter" the author is said to have described which childhood disorder?

Answer: ADHD

"Zappelphilipp" or "Fidgety Philipp" is often cited as an example of a hyperactive child and taken as an indication that ADHD is not a disorder of modern times.
7. "Struwwelpeter" has been condemned by some critics because it supposedly creates fear of authority figures. In how many of the ten stories do children get punished by such a figure?

Answer: 2

"The Inky Boys" and "Little Suck-a-Thumb" are the only stories where children are punished by a specific person. Natural (though sometimes tragic) consequences occur in five of the stories, and animals mete out punishment to evil doers in "Cruel Frederick" and "Wild Huntsman".
8. How many editions of "Struwwelpeter" were published during its first thirty years?

Answer: 100

As of 1996 over 700 German editions had been published.
9. There is a "Struwwelpeter" museum.

Answer: True

It is located in Frankfurt/Main, Germany. The collection includes different editions and parodies of "Struwwelpeter" as well as other sketches, manuscripts and children's books by Hoffmann.
10. The German Society for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Psychotherapy awards a medal in the "Struwwelpeter" author's name.

Answer: True

The Dr.-Heinrich-Hoffmann-Medal is awarded every four years.
