The Madrigal family branch, of which Amy and Dan are a part, had a listening device built right into the wall of the hotel room. Even though they are the same branch, the current leaders of the branch are still keen on keeping tabs on what is happening in the clue hunt, and their old habits of subterfuge and mistrust are not easily given up.

When Dan realizes that they're going to have to go see a play, he is horrified. "Torture," Dan muttered. "Cruel and unusual punishment. Worse than poisonous snakes and spiders in Australia. Worse than almost being chopped up into lollipops in China. This has got to be the worst thing we've had to do yet!"

Of the Ekaterina branch of the Cahill family, the Starlings were injured in the explosion at the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia that the Holt family had set for Amy and Dan.

When confronted by Ned, Ted and Sinead, Alistair had been brooding to himself over the state of things between the Cahill family branches, and how he had let himself down, and also how he had repeatedly let down Amy and Dan.

After coming away from the fracas at the Globe Theatre without a clue, Cora Wizard claimed that Jonah's heart was no longer in the Clue hunt. As a result, she took him to the police station to be identified as one of the people involved at the Globe, and threatened exposure of the incident to his adoring public if he didn't do things her way.

In order to give Cora a chance to look for a clue that she believed was hidden in the shoe of the wax statue of Shakespeare at Madame Tussauds, Jonah pretended to be one of the statues. Once he started to move, it drew crowds of starstruck fans.

With the partial clue in hand, Dan, Amy and Nellie go the the house/museum where Shakespeare lived in Stratford-upon-Avon. Unable to find anything, they look again at their clue and realize that the line "For this great man we sing was b____ here" doesn't actually fit the rhythm of the sonnet that it is a part of. Believing "buried" to be the better word, they make their way to the Holy Trinity Church nearby.

All of the teams at the church have come to the point where they are waiting for Dan and Amy to arrive, as they have come to realize that the young pair have proven themselves excellent Clue hunters. As Amy and Dan enter the church, the other groups all make their way out, leaving cameras behind to see what the siblings do, and being prepared to follow them.

Dan and Amy sneak back to the church after dark and dig through crumbling mortar to find a metal pole inscribed with five words over and over: Madrigal Stronghold * Cahill Ancestral Home. They also find a fragile ribbon with mixed up letters on it. Unfortunately, their subterfuge was to no avail, as the other teams all showed up as they revealed the artifacts.

Even though the helicopter pilot that they hired insisted that there would be nothing at those coordinates, Dan, Amy and Nellie are pleased to find a small island when they reach the spot. Was this the former home of Gideon and Olivia Cahill?

Everyone else is amazed that Dan's retinal scan is approved as a Madrigal representative. Dan had told Jonah that fact while they were in China, but Jonah had figured it was an angry exclamation over not knowing what branch he actually was.

Over the centuries, the Madrigals had remained a mysterious opponent to the other branches of the Cahill family, none of whom were aware of the existence of the youngest Cahill sibling, Madeleine. While the ultimate goal of the Madrigals was to reunite the family, much of their time was spent simply preventing the other branches from finding all 39 Clues until the time was right and a reconciliation was possible.

Over the course of the Clue hunt, Amy and Dan proved themselves to be true Madrigals in the sense of wanting the family to be united, using many opportunities to work with other teams, and even to sacrifice Clues and safety to themselves to safeguard the others at different times. Now Dan and Amy are faced with a huge responsibility, and an uncertain future.
