Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Hello! I can see you! I have very, very sharp teeth and people often think I am an alligator. What reptile am I?

Answer: Crocodile

Crocodiles live mainly by the river in Africa, Asia or America. They have a hard, bony covering and each crocodile has approximately 64-70 teeth, over twice as many as a human being. Their eyes lay on top of their head so the can search for prey while the rest of their body is submerged under water.
2. Hello! I can see you! I am an animal with a long neck and I can get a bird's eye view across the open African grasslands where I live. What am I?

Answer: Giraffe

The giraffe has an unusual coat; the fur is in blocks of orange, brown and black. The male is taller than the female, reaching heights of up to 6m tall. Their long tongue is used to grasp leaves from the topmost branches of trees. Their eyes bulge outwards so they get a good view of their surroundings.
3. Hello! I can see you! I have a lot of feathers and I can run faster than any other bird on land. What is my name?

Answer: Ostrich

The ostrich is the fastest known land bird in the whole world. It can reach speeds of up to 70 km/h. They have feathers and wings like other birds, but they are unable to fly. Their large eyes can see for miles although they cannot escape the predatory cheetah, the fastest living land mammal.
4. Hello! I can see you! My large ears keep me cool and I use my long trunk to spray water all over myself. Which big animal am I?

Answer: Elephant

African and Asian elephants are massive creatures which can weigh up to 5000kg each. Their large ears can hear for miles, but their tiny eyes only give them limited vision, seeing for approximately 8m. Their long trunks are made of muscle and very sensitive. They can pick a single leaf off a tree, or lift a whole set of logs. The noise they make from their trunk has a trumpety-trump sound.
5. Hello! I can see you! I am a very big cat with brown and black stripes. Which feline am I?

Answer: Tiger

The tiger is a very large breed of cat and they live in the wild throughout Asian countries. Their distinctive markings have made them attractive to poachers and so their breed is slowly becoming extinct. There are several wildlife parks around the world which breed and protect these animals to stop them all from dying.
6. Hello! I can see you! I love monkeying around and playing on spare tyres at the zoo. Which large primate am I?

Answer: Gorilla

The gorilla is the largest of primates. Their species, or group name, is called Troglodytes gorilla which means "tribe of hairy women". They have hair, or fur, all over their body which is normally dark brown. They live in the wild and have been known to interact with human beings. If you ever meet a gorilla, please avoid calling it a hairy woman as it may not appreciate it!
7. Hello! I can see you! I have a mane and a tail which swishes from side to side when I jump over hurdles. What four legged creature am I?

Answer: Horse

There are different names for horses, all dependent on how young or old they are, and whether they are male or female. These include foal, yearling, colt, filly, mare, gelding and stallion. A lot of people own horses, either as pet animals, or to use as working horses and racing. Horses have four gaits (speeds) and these are walk, trot, canter and gallop.
8. Hello! I can see you! I am a small livestock animal with horns and I go "baaaahhh". I am not a sheep. Which milk producing animal am I?

Answer: Goat

The most famous story about goats was from the fairy tale, "Three Billy Goats Gruff". The story told of three goats who tried to cross a bridge over a stream to get to the other side where the grass was much greener. They were stopped by an ugly troll who threatened to gobble them up. Goats in real life are very good mountain climbers and they can balance on a very steep cliff without getting scared.
9. Hello! I can see you! I swim in the sea but I have to watch out for killer whales as they love to eat me. What is my name?

Answer: Seal

Seals belong to a group of marine mammals called pinnipeds. This means that they don't have legs like humans, but they have flippers which help them move around in the sea and on land. Other mammals which are similar include the walrus, otter and sea lion. Seals have very thick skin called blubber which helps them keep warm as they live in a very cold climate.
10. Hello! I can see you! Do you like my new glasses? I am man's best friend and I love to go for walkies and play ball. What am I called?

Answer: Dog

The domestic dog has been a pet for thousands of years. People feed them, take them for walks, play with them, and look after them when they are ill. This is why they are known as man's best friend, because these animals sense when they are loved, and will return that love by the spadeful.
