Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. So we've got our hamburger and we're hungry, we lift it to our mouths and take a big bite out of it. What part of our body did we bite it with?

Answer: Teeth

We bite it with our teeth of course. There are four types of teeth, the big ones at the front are called incisors, the pointy ones beside those are called canines (because they look like dogs' teeth), the little ones after that are called premolars and the big ones that crush are molars.
2. So we've chewed up our hamburger and now it's time to swallow, what's the name of the liquid that we swallow along with our burger (our mouth makes it all the time)?

Answer: Saliva

Saliva is made in the mouth in special glands just under our tongues. It has proteins called enzymes in it and they help to start digesting the food.
3. So we've swallowed our burger and it's made its way into our tummy. Is stomach the proper, scientific name for tummy?

Answer: Yes

The stomach is where all the food you eat is broken up and nutrients are released and absorbed.
4. Now the food stays here in the tummy for a while and is mixed with acids. Why do you think the food is mixed with acid?

Answer: So that it can be broken down into smaller pieces.

Once the food is broken up into smaller pieces, the bits our body needs can pass through tiny holes in our small intestines and into the blood stream.
5. The burger has now moved into the small intestine and nutrients pass out into the blood stream. Where does the rest of the burger go?

Answer: Into the large intestine.

In the large intestine water is taken out of the left over bits of burger (now called waste) so that we can excrete it.
6. The large intestine is longer than the small intestine.

Answer: False

The small intestine is longer and the large intestine is just a bit thicker!
7. Some of the sugar in the burger has made its way to the liver to be stored. What do we call the illness where sugar isn't stored properly?

Answer: Diabetes

What's unusual about diabetes is that the people who have it have perfectly good livers, it's their pancreas that doesn't work. The pancreas makes hormones to help store the sugar and release it when it's needed.
8. Now some parts of our burger are being filtered out of the blood somewhere in our body. What body part filters the blood?

Answer: Kidneys

The kidneys filter all the waste out of the blood and make it into urine to be excreted when we go to the bathroom.
9. Our burger was very tasty but now we need a drink; what thing was added to the burger that could make us thirsty?

Answer: Salt

We need some salt, but too much of it can make our blood too thick and give us health problems when we're older.
10. So our burger is waiting in the large intestine, most of the water has been drained out. What happens now?

Answer: It leaves our body when we go to the bathroom.

The bits of the burger that our body doesn't need leaves the body when we go to the bathroom. You should always wash your hands when you've been to the bathroom because you can get nasty germs on your hands if you don't.
