Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Mouse King is attacking the Nutcracker! What does Marie throw at the Mouse King to stop him?

Answer: Her slipper

Marie throws her slipper just in time! It distracts the Mouse King long enough for the Nutcracker to stop the Mouse King with his sword.
2. The Nutcracker turns into a Prince and he, Marie and I are whisked away to the Land of Sweets; when we arrive, who greets us?

Answer: Sugar Plum Fairy

The Sugar Plum Fairy, who has been governing the Land of the Sweets until the Prince's return, greets us and shows us around. We marvel at the smell and sights of the wonderful array of sweets.

A sugar plum is not really a plum at all! It's usually a combination of minced dried fruit formed to look like a plum and coated in a sugary glaze. It may not even have any dried plum (prune) in it.
3. Spanish sweets whirl around Marie and the Prince. A delicious smell of something I might eat as a snack or drink hot on a cold winter's day fills the air. What can I smell?

Answer: Chocolate

I can hear castanets play as the Spanish sweets are presented to Marie and the Prince, and we all enjoy the wonderful tastes. Chocolate was brought to Spain after the Spanish conquered Mexico, and was used mostly as a drink for many years.
4. Some exotic-looking dancers appear to present Marie and the Prince with some steaming hot coffee from their homeland in the east. What kind of dance, also from their homeland, do they perform?

Answer: Arabian

I love the smell of the Arabian coffee, which I know was first discovered and cultivated in Ethiopia. Marie and the Prince enjoy the coffee and the rythmic Arabian dance, as they have never seen anything like it before.
5. Some lovely Chinese ladies appear to offer Marie and the Prince a drink of tea. What beautifully perfumed flower is commonly used in Chinese tea?

Answer: Jasmine

I can smell the jasmine tea as the Chinese ladies dance past; the fragant smell helps us to relax. I know the flowers are usually added to green or black tea leaves, and green tea in particular has excellent health benefits.
6. Some Russian ladies arrive and present a traditional Christmas sweet treat to Marie and the Prince. It's in the shape of a walking stick and is striped red and white. What are they given?

Answer: Candy canes

Candy canes were originally white and not bent. It's not certain when the bend in it was added, nor when the coloured stripe was first used. I doesn't matter to me! I think the sweet pepperminty flavour of the candy canes is delicious!
7. Marie and the Prince are excited to see some shepherdesses arrive to dance for them - but what nutty sweet thing are their sheep made from?

Answer: Marzipan

Marzipan is a paste made from finely ground almonds that can be easily moulded into many shapes including animals or fruit. It can be painted with food-safe paints to look very life-like.
8. Marie and the Prince are excited to see a Mother (in the shape of a house) and her eight children arrive - from what traditional Christmas food are these sweet treats made?

Answer: Gingerbread

The air fills with the spicy, aromatic smells of gingerbread, and our mouths water. The art of gingerbread making was brought to Europe in about the year 1000 from Armenia. For hundreds of years, gingerbread has been part of the Christmas tradition in many countries, and making a gingerbread house is a very enjoyable activity.
9. Some lovely sweet flowers appear and delight Marie and the Prince. I love to eat sugared flower petals - but some flowers are poisonous! What flower would I NOT want to eat?

Answer: Oleander

It's easy to make sugared flower petals - just lightly beat an egg white and paint it onto the flowers petals. Sprinkle them with castor sugar and allow them to dry. They can be used to decorate cakes and other desserts.

It's important only to eat flowers that are not harmful or they can make you very sick! Violets and roses and the flowers most commonly sugared. All parts of the oleander are poisonous and should be avoided.
10. I see the Sugar Plum Fairy float over. After all these delightful sweets, she suggests it would be lovely to finish with a dance, but with whom will she dance?

Answer: The Prince (Nutcracker)

The Sugar Plum Fairy and the Prince dance, bringing the celebration to the end, and all the people in the Land of Sweets join in. What a wonderful Christmas adventure!
